Sterile Processing Technician
Description

Responsible for preparing and assembling medical and surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment, maintaining the sterile processing areas, and receiving and distributing surgical supplies and equipment.


Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Support the mission, vision, and values of the organization. 
  2. Follow established protocols for cleaning, decontaminating, preparing and packaging, disinfecting or sterilizing, and storing medical and surgical supplies and equipment.
  3. Distribute medical and surgical supplies from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility or health care organization as needed.
  4. Adhere to standard precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  5. Follow safety procedures and manufacturer’s instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies, and equipment.
  6. Operate equipment used in the sterile processing areas safely and according to the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  7. Monitor, interpret, and document the results of physical, chemical, and biological indicators for all sterilizers used in the sterile processing areas.
  8. Prepare and distribute surgical case carts according to physician’s preference lists and anticipated needs of the perioperative team.
  9. Conduct routine inspections of sterilized instruments and equipment for cleanliness and functionality.
  10. Document sterilization processes and outcomes, maintaining accurate records in compliance with regulatory standards.
  11. Inventory, receive, and restock materials used for sterile processing services.
  12. Comply with organizational policies, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines.
  13. Exhibit professional interpersonal and communication skills. 
  14. Assist with improving the quality of sterile processing services.
  15. Assist with identifying pertinent evidence to establish benchmarks as directed.
  16. Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
Requirements

Qualifications Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Knowledge of sterilization methods, equipment, and infection control practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.


Qualifications Preferred:

  • One year of sterile processing experience
  • Certified Surgical Technologist
  • Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft® PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)


Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, sharp instruments and other devices, communicable diseases, chemicals, and repetitive motions
  • Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting instrument trays
  • Manual and finger dexterity
  • Hand and eye coordination 
  • Sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods 
  • Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
