Position Overview:
The Junior Staff Accountant will play a critical role in supporting the Finance & Accounting team by ensuring the accurate recording of revenue, maintaining accounts receivable, and assisting with various financial processes. You should be a detail-oriented and highly organized individual looking to develop your accounting skills within a philanthropic organization. The Junior Staff Accountant will work closely with Advancement, program teams, and finance staff to ensure proper recording and reconciliation of revenue streams, compliance with funder requirements, and timely financial reporting.
What You Will Do:
Accounts Receivable & Revenue Management
- Process receipt of checks in collaboration with Advancement, including coding and scanning, ensuring accuracy and timely recording.
- Perform revenue analysis over all contributions to ensure revenue is recorded in the correct period.
- Reconcile revenue accounts in collaboration with Advancement, ensuring consistency between financial and fundraising records.
- Handle ad hoc invoicing for contributions and other receivables, ensuring accuracy and timely recording.
- Send weekly reports of all ACHs and wire transfers to Advancement.
Financial Reporting & Reconciliation
- Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
- Prepare and distribute statements of activity, including budget-to-actual comparisons at the department, program, and funder code levels as well as for Giving Circles.
- Initiate journal entries for tracking Donor Advised Fund contributions to Liberty Hill Foundation.
- Monitor and track grant-related expenses, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and proper coding of expenses and generate related journal entries
- Generate journal entries to correct
Budgeting & Compliance Support
- Assist with the annual budget process, including inputting budgets at the department, program, and funder code levels into the accounting system.
- Maintain compliance with internal financial policies, internal controls, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide support for audits, financial reviews, and tax filings, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
General Accounting Support
- Activate and deactivate funder codes as required.
- Help prepare audit documents, reports, and schedules as needed.
- Work with project teams to track budgets, expenses, and variances.
- Assist in managing daily cash flow to ensure financial stability.
- Perform ad hoc financial tasks and reporting as assigned by the Controller.
What You Will Have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration preferred, or an equivalent of education and lived experience.
- 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or philanthropic organization.
- Knowledge of accounts receivable, revenue recognition, and reconciliation processes.
- Familiarity with grant accounting and funder compliance requirements.
- Strong proficiency in Excel and experience working with accounting/financial systems (e.g., FE NXT, QuickBooks, or similar ERP software).
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
- Experience with grant tracking and funder reporting.
- Familiarity with GAAP, nonprofit financial compliance, and fund accounting best practices.
- Knowledge of internal controls and financial policies in a nonprofit setting.
- Familiarity reconciling with Advancement to ensure accurate revenue tracking.
- Experience supporting audits (including Single Audit and other regulatory audits).
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with internal teams.
Physical Asks:
- Ability to engage in a hybrid remote work environment in our shared downtown co-working space or working remotely.
- Must live in Los Angeles County and be available for face-to-face collaboration when necessary.
