Street Maintenance Technician

Summary of Position:

The position of Street Maintenance Technician is responsible for the daily upkeep of the town’s roads and sidewalks. The street department has a team of six employees and works to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the town through trash collection, debris pick up, leaf removal, mowing, and street clearing. A Street Maintenance Technician will help collect trash, pick up large items left by the curb, perform leaf removal, conduct mowing, conduct street clearing during storms and winter weather, and any other tasks designated by the Street Foreman or Public Works Director.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive Trash Truck to collect curbside trash from residents. 
  • Collect debris from sidewalk and roadways for chipping.
  • Mowing and weed eating of town-maintained areas.
  • Operate Chipper Truck and process debris for chipping.
  • Drive Leaf Machine to remove leaves from sidewalks.
  • Drive Salt Truck during inclement weather.
  • Plow roadways and town parking lots during inclement weather.
  • Respond to citizen request for additional trash cans or pick up items.
  • Operate heavy equipment as needed.
  • Assists with repair and cleaning of storm drains. 
  • Work within other public works department as needed.
  • Any other task designated by the Street Foreman or Public Works Director.


Requirements

Qualifications, Education and Experience:

  • Due to the dangerous nature of the industry, and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
  • At least two years’ Heavy Equipment Operation experience preferred.
  • Possession of North Carolina Commercial B driver’s license required, will allow ninety days to obtain license.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to wear the necessary PPE. 
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to all types of weather while completing work assignments, i.e., rain, heat, sun, freezing temperatures.
  • Must be able to traverse various terrains.
  • Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. 
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds constantly to lift objects. 
  • Must possess visual acuity to operate mobile equipment and monitor site progress.


Special Requirement:

  • May require mandatory call backs during inclement weather.
  • May included nights, weekends, and holidays.
