JOB SUMMARY: 


Tutors provide and help to integrate effective learning and study strategies for their assigned

students, while at the same time helping to clarify and/or reinforce course content, assignments and material.

Tutoring provides academic support to students for developing their knowledge, skills, and confidence to

become independent learners. Tutoring is a supplement to teaching, not a replacement for class attendance and

participation. Tutors do not provide “answers” but rather assist in the learning process. Tutors are expected to

be mature individuals who exert a positive influence on the members of the Lourdes community.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes and integrates the Franciscan values of community, learning, reverence and service
  • Meets with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide learning assistance
  • Maintains a weekly schedule of available hours in the Academic Success Center or student appointments
  • Keeps regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the TutorTrac software and/or relevant
  • forms
  • Completes and submits tutoring reports for each student on a daily basis
  • Checks emails daily for scheduled tutoring appointments
  • Logs in and out for each session using the TutorTrac system
  • Assures all tutees sign in and out for each tutoring session
  • Works with students only in area of expertise
  • Works only with current Lourdes University students on current course subject matter
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information
  • Ability to work with students of diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • Possesses interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Courteous and professional at all times with students, faculty and staff
  • Maintains communication with supervisory staff
  • Hours must not exceed 19 hours per week


ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attends and participates in mandatory tutor-training sessions as required by the Tutoring Coordinator
  • Arrives on time and conducts sessions in a professional manner
  • Fosters academic integrity
  • Models appropriate academic attitudes and behaviors to staff, faculty and students
  • Develops in-class presentations and workshops as needed
  • Serves as a mentor for new tutors
  • Proven track record of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality
  • Takes on other duties as assigned by Academic Success Center staff
Requirements
  • Completion of a particular course with at least an "A-" (or a “B” if authorized by instructor)
  • Must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Provide copy of transcript(s) from undergraduate and graduate institutions
  • Writing tutors must be proficient in APA, MLA and Chicago Style writing styles
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in the field in which the individual is to tutor
  • Direct experience in tutoring or teaching is preferred
  • Letter of recommendation from an instructor or employer
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds
  • Participates in mandatory training sessions
