Job Summary

The Custodian fulfills the mission of the Catholic Church by maintaining a neat, clean, safe, and organized environment. The Custodian assists the pastor and staff by ensuring that the parish is well maintained for its ministerial purpose. The Custodian has decision making responsibilities within essential job functions, in keeping with parish policies. The position is hired and evaluated by the Parish Business Administrator.


Ministerial Character

Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. In order to fulfill Christ's mission, the parish leaders employ suitable, chosen collaborators, sharing with them Christ's mission and entrusting to them various responsibilities.

Positions employed in this Parish help extend the ministry of the Parish leaders in particular ways as outlined in the job description. The employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor and other staff in the performance of their ministry and, therefore, engages in ministry for the Church.


Essential Duties

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the Parish and Diocese
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding parish matters
  • Cleans classrooms, work rooms, kitchens, hallways, and carpeted areas daily
  • Cleans and disinfects bathrooms daily and replenishes supplies
  • Removes trash from classrooms, offices, and eating areas on a daily basis
  • Conducts weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning as required
  • Assists with the set up and clean-up for meetings and special events
  • Periodically disinfects door handles, telephones, switch plates, and trash receptacles
  • Maintains exterior entrances and walkways
  • Applies universal precautions in cleaning practices
  • Complies with MSDS regulations
  • Maintains the security of issued keys, secures buildings, turns off lights, sets thermostats
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
  • Maintains a work schedule that maximizes availability to the parish, students, and staff
  • Collaborates with others to enhance the work environment
  • Conducts emergency clean ups and repairs as needed
  • Conducts periodic maintenance activities and minor repairs
  • Meets with and monitors work of outside contractors
  • Communicates maintenance and repair issues to the Parish Business Administrator

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • None required

Certifications and Training:

  • Must submit an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Application for Ministry within the first week of employment, participate in an EIM Basic abuse prevention training workshop within 30 days of submitting a complete Application for Ministry, and maintain EIM compliance during the entire term of employment.

Working Conditions

  • Required to work some nights and weekends

  • Required to work a minimum of a full school day
  • Required to work in standard school conditions

Employee Certification

All employees must adhere to the Catholic Church Standards of Conduct, the Diocese of Austin EIM policies, and the social, ethical, and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as interpreted by the Bishop of Austin.
