Position Summary:

The Principal Opto-Mech Engineer will support R&D, new product development and production while directly reporting to the R&D/Optics group. It will be their responsibility to work within multidisciplinary teams to design, build and test optical mounting structures, alignment mechanisms and housings. They will be solely responsible for all reliability modelling and testing with respect to optical components and assemblies. This position will also support the functions of the R&D – Optical Department to meet the requirements of the relevant ISO 9001:2015 standards based on the quality objectives established by Top Management.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Subject matter expert on optical mounting and alignment for consumer products.
  • Work with Mechanical, Manufacturing and Optical Engineers on joint design efforts.
  • Design, tolerance and simulate mounting structures, alignment mechanisms and housings.
  • Specify and perform shock/vibe and thermal simulations and testing.
  • Support the design, modelling and testing of stray light mitigation.
  • Develop and present design reviews and computational analyses.
  • Support the development of custom test/assembly fixtures and product design.
  • Drive process improvement within product development and manufacturing.
  • Research novel technologies and develop relationships with potential vendors.
  • Document BOMs, assembly instructions and work procedures.
  • Design, build, and test head-mounted prototype systems.
  • Meet required ISO 9001:2015 standards and necessary training based on the relevant Quality Objectives.
Requirements

Minimal Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's in Science Degree in Mechanical/Optical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of related work experience.
  • Proficient with mechanical design using CAD.
  • GD&T experience and proficiency with tolerance analyses.
  • Ability to perform reliability modelling such as thermal and shock simulation analyses.
  • Experience with injection molded parts and 3D printing.
  • Hands on experience with optical alignment, metrology and prototype builds.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and communicate ideas and concepts within a group.
  • Strong problem solving and statistical analysis skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree and/or PhD in related field.
  • 8+ years of related work experience.
  • Proficient with mechanical design using CAD (SolidWorks and PDM a plus).
  • Ability to perform reliability modelling such as thermal and shock simulation analyses.
  • Experience with injection molded parts and 3D printing.
  • Experience with Optics Studio/Optics Builder.
  • Hands on experience with optical mounting, alignment, metrology, stray light and prototype builds.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Travel: Negligible.

Physical Demands: Frequently required to sit, speak, hear, see, and perform repetitive motion (data entry). Occasionally required to lift or carry (10 lb. minimum). Reasonable accommodations will be made available if applicable.

Salary Description
$100,000 - $140,000
