Summary:

The J Summer Day Camp program is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). Camp runs 11 weeks, June 2- August 15, providing activities that help campers Play, Connect, and Grow throughout each camp day: swimming, arts/crafts, climbing, team building, sports, and much more. The J is currently hiring for Day Camp Unit Head - SFC for the Creve Coeur location. All camp staff must attend mandatory staff orientation on May 27 – June 1.


Responsibilities:

  • Supervising campers, ensuring their safety at all times.
  • Ensure Pre-Care is staffed and covered.
  • Supervise Camp Counselors.
  • Maintaining accurate attendance records.
  • Administering first aid as needed.
  • Plan and schedule camp activities.
  • Engage with campers and counselors and ensure camp counselors are consistently engaging with their campers.
  • Ensure campers and counselors are behaving appropriately at all times by being both proactive and reactive as necessary.
  • Communicate with parents, as needed, to collaborate on camper behavior, sharing both positive and negative interactions that occur during the camp day.
  • Swim with campers when directed. Assist Swim Instructors with lessons as needed, and engage with campers in the pool during free swim. Serve as “eyes on deck” when assigned. Ensure camp counselors are doing the same.
  • Care for the physical and emotional well-being of campers and counselors at all times.
  • Be a supportive team member, and demonstrate a positive attitude.
  • Provide quality customer service at all times.
  • Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem-solving.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques (appropriate techniques will be reviewed during staff orientation).
  • Enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Follow and enforce all J and Day Camp rules and regulations.
  • Administered performance reviews under the direction of the Director(s).
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Previous camp or childcare experience is essential.
  • Auditory, visual, ambulatory, cognitive, communication, and physical ability to complete major tasks at camp.
  • Ability to relate to and communicate with one’s peer group, parents, as well as to campers’ age and skill levels.
  • The ability to provide guidance, supervision, and engage with children in an enthusiastic manner is required.
  • Ability to assist in teaching an activity; specialized knowledge required for sports, specialty, and arts camps.
  • Ability to assist campers in emergencies; including fire, evacuation, illness, or injury.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
  • Judaic experiences preferred or a willingness to learn.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification is required for certain camps (training provided if necessary).
  • Note that some camps require successful registration on the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry as a condition of employment. If required, this registration must be maintained in good standing for continued employment.
