The Lifeguard plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals using the aquatic facility. This position includes maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pools, around the deck, and surrounding areas. The Lifeguard creates a positive atmosphere that promotes community for members, other lifeguards and swim instructors.
The lifeguard opener is required to be onsite at 4:30am Monday through Friday. Open swim starts at 5:00am. Preparation for that includes turning on the lights, removing the vacuum, and untarping during cold months. The opening lifeguard is the sole lifeguard onsite from 4:30-6:00am and is required to sit chair from 5:00-6:00am when the second guard arrives. For safety purposes, the security team is on-call in case of emergency. This position earns an additional $2/hour shift differential from 4:30-7:00am.
Key Responsibilities
· Maintain active surveillance of the pools, splash pad, and the pool deck
· Has knowledge of the emergency action plan; respond to emergency situations in accordance with the JCC policies and American Red Cross (ARC) standards; complete all incident reports as required
· Maintain effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff
· Inspect pool deck for unsafe or broken equipment; check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving; report maintenance issues to the manager on duty
· Attend all in-service training and staff meetings
· Dress in the uniform provided for all shifts
· Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks on the Daily Duties (DD) and Weekly Duties (WD) forms on the pool deck, Aquatics Office, deck bathrooms, and Break Room
· Review DD/WD forms
Scheduling
· Arrive in time to be at the guard station when shift starts
· Provide two weeks' notice for time off
· Find coverage when shifts need to be traded or covered by other staff (subject to AD/AAD approval)
· Check the scheduling app for messages and shift changes

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
· Minimum age of 16
· Background Check for employees over 18 shall be subject to pre-employment
Educational Requirements
· Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification; CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.
· If a valid certificate is not held, taking a lifeguard class at the Valley of the Sun J is an option.
Physical Requirements
· Stand and/or sit for extended periods while remaining alert
· Perform water rescues, including lifting swimmers ranging from 50-300 lbs.
· Climb and sit on guard chairs up to 6’ high.
· Able to work in an outdoor pool facility in summer and winter conditions
· Remain outside in 100+ degree temperatures for two-to-eight-hour shifts with rotations every 20-30 minutes
· Variable working hours include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays
