Description

The Greater Peoria Family YMCA is seeking a Sports Trainer – Basketball Specialist to work with children and teens, promoting basketball skills, enhancing physical competence, building confidence, and fostering fundamental skill development. This role also emphasizes providing outstanding hospitality to create a positive experience for all participants. The Sports Trainer - Basketball Specialist will serve as a resource to help participants achieve their fitness and skill development goals while fostering a sense of well-being.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS (ALSO CALLED ENTRY REQUIREMENTS OR KNOW HOW): 

  1. Certifications: CPR, AED, Basic First Aid.   
  2. Mandated Reporter. 
  3. At least 18 years of age. 
Requirements
  1. Ensure the health, safety and well-being of children in the program, by providing close supervision of all activities. 
  2. Provide a fun, safe and positive experience for all participants and create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.  
  3. Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (i.e. ratio, attendance). 
  4. Work with the supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each program session. 
  5. Teach rules, fundamentals and enhance basic skills in basketball. Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.  
  6. Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.  
  7. Create and modify lesson plans and instruction that is age appropriate, progressive and meets the needs of the participants. Understand skills for ages 5 – 17, while utilizing differentiated instructions. 
  8. Create an atmosphere in which all participants can have fun, are safe and learn the importance of good principled athletics. 
  9. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration for the next session. 
  10. Communicate to parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child/teen. 
  11. Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts. 
  12. Provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants who are supporting the program, when needed. 
  13. Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions for emergency situations. 
  14. Ensure the cleanliness of program space during all activities. 
  15. Inform Supervisor on-duty regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out. 
  16. Actively participate in all training sessions, designated meetings and special events. 
  17. Other activities and duties as needed that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members. 
  18. Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  1. Ability to walk, stands, and sit including on the floor for long periods of time. 
  2. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. 
  3. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds in weight. 
  4. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds. 
  5. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time. 
  6. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking. 
  7. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate. 
  8. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency 
  9. Opening and closing facility

Salary Description
$16.22/hour
