Position Title: Residential Adult Counselor 


Program and Location: Adult Transitional Program 1 OR II- San Luis Obispo 


Hours /Salary

Relief, non-exempt position. Due to the 24/7 nature of the program this position may include some combination of day, weekend and overnight shifts. Schedules are flexible and can accommodate a variety of preferences. Relief day shifts are typically 8-4 or 9-5:30. Relief overnight shift hours are 4pm-8am with sleeping hours from 12am-6am.  Includes a paid sick time and a variety of helpful employee perks as well. Anticipated hiring range is $21.00 hourly.  (*Full Salary Schedule for $21.00-$27.00 hourly)

Position Summary:

Residential Adult Counselors (RAC) are expected to function as positive role models and treat residents with respect and empathy. RAC’s promote trauma informed cooperation and harmony in the communal living environment while upholding and promoting the social rehabilitation philosophy in all duties performed.


Responsibilities and Duties:

1.  Recognize when residents are in a psychiatric crisis or in emotional distress. Accurately assess and de-escalate crisis situations. Teach and reaffirm residents appropriate coping, anger management, and conflict resolution skills.

2.  Aid residents in developing social, vocational, independent living, and effective life management skills.  Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADL’s) including proper nutritional guidance, menu planning, meal preparation, shopping, budgeting, housecleaning, and personal hygiene.

3.  Encourage and facilitate residents to access and utilize community resources, support systems, services, and opportunities. Coordinate recreational activities.

1.  Promote, encourage and maintain trauma-informed practices in all services and activities. Practice and promote, both individually and in team meetings, TMHA’s Collaborative Communication Guidelines in order to facilitate clear, empathetic and person-centered communication. 

4.  Issue and monitor medication. This duty may include reminding residents to take medications according to prescriber’s orders and recognizing symptoms and side effects of medication.

5.  Assist in development of initial appraisal/needs and services, plans Assist residents in determining, developing, and carrying out their own personal goals, while fostering independence.

6.  Maintain the orderliness and upkeep of the facility. This duty may include general housekeeping, maintenance work and repairs as needed.

7.  Complete program paperwork. This duty may include resident statement of plans and goals, resident files, medication logs, progress notes , time sheets, petty cash, grocery scrip, and/or inventory forms.

8.  Attend scheduled staff meetings and complete required hours of in-service training.

9.   Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Program Administrator/ Assistant Manager.


Job Environment:

1.  Moderate, physical activity and frequent driving. May include moving or lifting up to 50 lbs.

2.  Supports the team approach to meeting program objectives.

3.  Involves moderate risks that require safety precautions and the risk of exposure to potentially intense situations. 

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of 1 year, full-time experience working in a program serving people with co-occurring disorders is preferred. Flexibility and availability to meet the scheduling needs of a 24/7 program. Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative work style and strong oral, written, and communication skills. Well defined organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and flexibly. Ability to handle intense situations, display good judgment and decision making skills, and remain calm and clearheaded under pressure. Able to work effectively with a variety of people and personality types regardless of age, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or socio-economic level. Ability to possess and maintain good physical and mental health. Ability to work well within a team and maintain a professional, respectful attitude in the workplace. Ability to be willing to work with supervisor oversight and direction. Attendance is an essential function of this job that requires face-to-face interaction with clients and/or other employees. Conditions of employment include: Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver’s License, at least 2 years driving experience and DMV driving record that meets TMHA’s current vehicle insurance requirements. May be required to utilize reliable personal vehicle and auto insurance. Must comply with a TB assessment (possibly a TB test if needed to confirm a negative tuberculosis result) and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting. Complete pre-employment physical. Must be able to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
