POSITION SUMMARY

The Outdoor Program Manager will infuse and model the Girl Scout Law into their everyday work to fulfill the mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the work a better place. 

The Outdoor Program Manager is responsible for comprehensive development, marketing, and leading facilitation of outdoor program events/activities on all council properties, as well as overseeing summer camp.


MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES—Outdoor Program Manager

• Research/develops high-quality innovative outdoor program opportunities for girls K-12, which incorporates the Girl Scout Leadership Experience curriculum 

• Promotes council outdoor programs, summer camps, and properties through informal and formal avenues (speaking at Service Unit meetings, community organizations, etc.) throughout the year

• Coordinates execution of outdoor program events/activities within the assigned geographic area, per number set annually, and works collaboratively with other staff in the execution of department and/or council initiatives. 

• Manages camp trading post including ordering, inventory management, staffing, and financial management in cooperation with the finance department.

• Recruits/trains/supervises local volunteers and activity leaders to assist in outdoor program facilitation within assigned area

• Manages outdoor skill training program (Venture Out II) for volunteers including curriculum management and volunteer trainer management

• Identifies and works collaboratively with other community-based organizations to create and deliver outdoor-focused educational and leadership development programs for Girl Scouts of all levels

• Manages department reporting, budgeting, goal setting, strategic planning, and outcomes evaluation with the support of the Program Director

• Provides support to council fund development programs

• Participates as assigned by/or with approval of supervisor on council-planning committees/groups

There are times throughout our year when the work of other departments becomes heavy and/or critically timely. Examples may include but are not limited to—membership recruitment/renewal campaigns and efforts, product program logistics and support to include cookie cupboards and volunteer assistance, volunteer appreciation and engagement, retail inventory and delivery (among regional offices), program signature event participation, and support, and property maintenance/improvement as requested. 


MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES— SUMMER Camp Director

• Works collaboratively with Outdoor Program Specialists in research/development of all aspects of high-quality, innovative resident camp programs for girls K-12, which incorporate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience curriculum, including the budgeting process

• Works collaboratively with the Communications Department to develop and market summer camp brochure

• Annually reviews camp programs, seeking cross-departmental input where necessary, and works collaboratively with others to design and implement improvements

• Provide regular input to the Property Department regarding program needs/issues/concerns on properties, ensuring camp facilities meet established standards before, during, and after camp sessions

• Develops camp sessions, programmatic offerings, and partnerships commensurate with the interests of our members, the goals of our council, and the need for progressive outdoor experiences

• Ensures that diversity and pluralism are embraced and incorporated into the design/delivery of camp experiences

• Creates camp schedules and procedures designed to facilitate smooth operations, staff leadership opportunities, and camper growth

• Conducts annual processes of camp staff hiring for assigned camp (interviews, hiring, paperwork, pre-camp training, coaching, and post-camp reviews)

• Ensures that a risk/crisis management plan and emergency procedures are in place and staff are trained/proficient in respective procedures and policies

• Implements and oversees approximately 8 weeks of summer camp including staff management, program implementation, health and safety, risk management, camper and family engagement, food procurement, and trading post-management.

KNOWLEDGE AND CREDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or experience commensurate with the degree

• Minimum 25 years of age

• 3-5 years of experience in program development, working with adults and youth; Girl Scout experience preferred

• 3-5 years of experience in a supervisory position working with adults and youth 

• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record

Preferred

• Demonstrated ability in youth program curriculum design and management

• Knowledge of Girl Scout Leadership Experience


ABILITY AND SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to motivate others and encourage them toward the Girl Scout Leadership Experience

• Ability to perform duties including but not limited to; public speaking for large audiences, hands-on program delivery working with Girl and Adult members, and be able work in the outdoor elements

• Knowledge of campsite safety rules and procedures or willingness to learn

• Ability to lift at least 25 pounds

• Ability/confidence to cultivate collaborative relationships with key community leaders

• Ability to analyze, plan, advise, and accept directions

• Ability to work with and supervise staff and volunteers

• Must be able to work, bend, stoop, sit, and lift for extended periods of time

• Subscribes to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement

• Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities, work independently, effectively market council initiatives and meet deadlines.

• Strong human relations skills and can work well with people of diverse backgrounds

HOURS AND TRAVEL 

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including substantial amounts of weekend and evening work

• Flexibility to live on-site during the summer camp season (approximately 8 weeks)
