JOB TITLE: Head Lifeguard

REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or Site Coordinator

FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt


JOB PURPOSE:

Under close supervision of the Aquatics Director performs professional duties in ensuring effective performance of lifeguard functions.  Assists in training, scheduling, and appraising lifeguards.  Ensures that lifeguarding certification is current and that all lifeguards are fully competent in performing water rescue procedures and coordinates in ensuring safety of patrons in and around the pools and monitoring swimmers and to enforce all safety rules.  Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.  Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.  


PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):

 

  1. Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescue as necessary.
  2. Ensures that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks.  Fills in for lifeguards as necessary.
  3. Orient lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities.  Ensures that all lifeguards are current on their training and certifications.
  4. Assists with in-service training.  Ensures that lifeguards are fully competent in first aid, CPR, and all water rescue techniques.
  5. Assists with the scheduling of lifeguards to ensure that adequate coverage of pool areas are maintained during operating hours.
  6. Keeps the management well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs.
  7. Inventories and recognizes when supplies or equipment need to be ordered and communicates the needs to the Aquatic Director.
  8. Engages with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues.  Provides input and feedback while responding to problems.
  9. Ensures that aquatic programs are occurring as desired and assists with the overall management of swimming events.
  10. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.  Completes related reports as required.
  11. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
  12. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  13. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the State Health Department code.
  14. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  15. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  16. Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action. 
  17. Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  18. Be the first one to open the door and the last one to close the door to ensure all staff are out, doors are locked and all alarms are set.
  19. Assists with pool operations, and maintains a clean environment
Requirements

Required:

  • 17 years of age
  • Current ARC lifeguard Certification
  • Current CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, First Aid Certification

Preferred:

  • 1 year experience in an aquatic setting
  • Knowledge of pool chemicals and record keeping
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish
Salary Description
$12-$13/hr
