Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Job Captain to support and drive residential Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering and design projects, with a focus on single-family homes. The Job Captain will oversee the coordination, design, and execution of non-residential MEP designs while working collaboratively with engineers, designers, and project stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered with a high quality, on time, and in compliance with all applicable codes and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Team Management:
- Manage, engage with, and mentor a team of MEP engineers, designers, and drafters.
- Assign projects, monitor progress, and enforce high quality work delivered on time
- Foster a collaborative and supportive team culture focused on employee engagement, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Project Coordination and Execution:
- Lead the production of MEP designs, drawings, and documentation for non-residential, light commercial projects.
- Coordinate closely with civil, architectural, and structural teams to ensure seamless integration of MEP systems.
- Enforce an unwavering QA process for MEP designs through both peer review and/or Job Captain design review prior to delivery to the client
- Ensure all designs meet local building codes, energy regulations, and client requirements.
- Adhere to project timelines, monitor deliverables, and ensure milestones are met within established deadlines.
Technical Design and Problem Solving:
- Assist in the layout and design of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, Attic ventilation, Solar, and fire protection systems for non-residential projects.
- Review and organize design calculations, equipment selections, and construction documents for quality and accuracy.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and provide practical solutions in coordination with engineers and subject matter experts.
- Implement sustainable and cost-effective design approaches, including energy-efficient systems.
Client and Stakeholder Interaction:
- Act as a technical contact for clients, contractors, and internal teams during the project lifecycle.
- Assist in the coordination of permit submissions, approvals, and design modifications based on client or jurisdictional feedback.
- Communicate regularly with trade partners, construction teams, and other stakeholders to ensure design intent and project requirements are met.
Process Improvement:
- Follow and contribute to the improvement of internal best practices for non-residential MEP design and project delivery.
- Identify opportunities for process optimization, enhancing quality, efficiency, and project outcomes.
- Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in non-residential MEP systems and design software.
Metrics and Reporting:
- Send regular reports to management with metrics for Quality, Delivery, and productivity, using Arcxis’ dynamic data dashboards.
- Commit to continuous improvement by following daily management routines that leverage our workflow management system and its dynamic metrics.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in non-residential MEP design, preferably in multi-family, amenity centers, club houses, or other similarly associated product types.
- Proficiency with design software, including AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar tools.
- Solid understanding of non-residential building codes, energy standards, and permit processes.
- Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience coordinating sustainable design and energy-efficient non-residential systems.
- Understanding of non-residential construction practices and workflows.
- Ability to problem-solve technical challenges with a focus on value engineering and cost-effective solutions.
The Job Captain role is to act as the operational and technical lead within a non-residential MEP engineering team, while deferring higher-level leadership and strategic decisions to management. The responsibilities emphasize project execution, coordination, and technical oversight, which are key elements of the Job Captain role.
