JOB TITLE: Referee, Official or Umpire
REPORTS TO: Program Director or Assigned Supervisor
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE:
The Referee, Official or Umpire will administer all functions of officiating the games, matches and tournaments related to the assigned sports season. They will have a direct focus on the safety of participants as well as retention of members through great customer service. Must strive to work cooperatively with fellow employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all members, participants, and employees by interpreting and enforcing all policies established by the YMCA.
- Assess the playing conditions to ensure safety for players
- Meet with coaches and players prior to the start of games to ensure understanding of any rules variations that might be in effect
- Arrive before the start of games for set up and remain after game for clean up of all equipment and playing areas.
- Ensure that games begin and end at scheduled times
- Serve as a positive role model to players, parents, coaches, and fellow officials by enforcing all rules, demonstrating good sportsmanship, and officiating consistently with the YMCA Youth Sports philosophy
- Report any injuries to supervisor
- Before each game, bring all teams to the center and teach Character Development and/or pledge.
- Understand and enforce all game rules and regulations, as well as enforcing them
- Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.
- Assist in keeping supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment.
- Report any equipment damage or loss to supervisor
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.
- Other duties that may be assigned
Requirements
Required:
- 16 years of age
- Good understanding of assigned sport, game rules and equipment used
- YMCA training on officiating is required.
- Current CPR/AED, First Aid, O2 certification
Preferred:
- Experience in sports, previous officiating is a plus
- Bilingual - English/Spanish
Salary Description
$11.00 an hour
