St. Gabriel the Archangel School is seeking an elementary classroom 5th grade teacher for the 2024-2025 Academic Year. Partnering with parents in their role as primary educators, St. Gabriel the Archangel School extends the mission of the Church in forming true disciples of Jesus Christ. Through a Catholic Classical Liberal Arts education centered on Christ, we provide an integrated approach fostering a love for truth, beauty, and goodness. We seek to instill a natural desire for wisdom and virtue in all scholars.
The teacher serves the mission of the Catholic Church by planning, guiding, and evaluating the learning process of the scholars within the framework of the school's philosophy, organization, and curriculum. The teacher provides the appropriate learning atmosphere and activities designed to maximize student competencies and skills for intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual growth. The teacher has decision making responsibilities in keeping with school policies and the Diocesan Schools Administrative Manual.
The ideal candidate would have experience teaching elementary school and possess knowledge of classical teaching. Current Missouri teaching certification is preferred, but an ability to acquire certification within three years of employment is acceptable. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field is required.
Duties/Responsibilities:.
- Understand and uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church at all times.
- Lead scholars to an understanding and an appreciation of all that is good, beautiful, and true.
- Relate to scholars by loving them with the love of Christ, encouraging them to begin and/or develop their own relationship with God through sacraments and scripture, and challenging them to love others.
- Be a role model of Christian love, faith, truthfulness, and virtue.
- Be open and welcoming to learners with diverse and exceptional needs within the traditional classroom environment.
- Promote the health and wellbeing of all members of our community.
- Manage the class by setting clear expectations of behavior, establishing reasonable routines, and promoting self-discipline based on Catholic principles.
- Teach scholars in a challenging, enthusiastic and age-appropriate manner using classical pedagogy. Ensure that within the year, the scope and sequence of concepts and skills assigned to the grade are taught to the scholars.
- Apply Catholic moral principles and comply with the school policy in administration of behavioral discipline in the classroom. Communicate clearly, frequently, and regularly to parents about discipline issues regarding their children.
- Evaluate and document each scholars’ progress on a regular basis and report that progress to the student, parents, and principal.
- Assist the principal as needed with the curriculum selection and development to fulfill the distinctive character of a Catholic liberal school.
- Collaborate with the inclusive education team to ensure the best learning plan is in place for all scholars within the school’s capacity.
- Respond expediently to parent, student, or administrator concerns and ideas.
- Assure that all classroom equipment and materials are safe and well-maintained.
- Serve as an advocate for St. Gabriel, as well as Catholic liberal education, in the Kansas City area.
- Stay current on the best practices in education and teaching, particularly with regard to classical education, in order to provide academic excellence.
- Actively involve parents in the life of the school, and coordinate classroom volunteers.
- Establish positive relationships and communicate effectively with all members of our school community.
- Collaborate with the St. Gabriel the Archangel School faculty and staff to create evening activities to showcase programs to St. Gabriel the Archangel School’s parish and school community.
- Additional job-related responsibilities duties as requested by the building administrator.
- Serve on committees and perform other duties as directed by the Principal.
- Collaborate with peers to enhance the work environment and support instructional planning.
- Demonstrate gains in student performance that are in keeping with St. Gabriel’s goals.
- Demonstrate a willingness to respond to individual learning needs.
- Attend school-wide functions and special events as required.
- Maintain professionalism in dress and hygiene following the St. Gabriel Faculty Handbook.
- Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
- Act as a witness to the Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Support and adhere to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and Diocese.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding school matters.
- Plan for instruction with specific student objectives and logically sequenced instruction based on the approved curriculum and diocesan standards.
- Select and use appropriate material and resources for scholars to engage in learning.
- Use effective and developmentally appropriate instructional methods according to current on site training and professional best practice.
- Use a variety of formative and summative assessments.
- Maintain current and accurate records.
- Practice positive, consistent discipline in the management of the classroom that is centered on the Holy Virtues and the dignity of the child.
- Conference with parents upon request and respond to messages in a timely manner.
- Meet staff development guidelines as set forth by the administrator.
- Demonstrate professional work habits by regular attendance, honoring schedules/deadlines, organizing work, and conducting assigned tasks in an effective and efficient manner.
- Keep the Principal informed of areas of need and concern.
Candidates for faculty positions at St. Gabriel the Archangel School must:
- Exemplify and articulate a life of faith in Christ.
- Demonstrate a willingness to be trained in Catholic liberal educational methods.
- Be in agreement with the philosophy of St. Gabriel the Archangel School articulated in the Vision Statement.
- Be willing to cooperate with and support the policies of the school administration (pastor and principal).
- Be passionate about educating children in a Catholic environment, and about the grade/subject to be taught. Experience is preferred but not required.
- Be willing to work closely with parents in the education of their children.
- Be committed to academic excellence.
- Be committed to continuing, lifelong learning.
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree and a current teaching certificate.
- Practicing Catholic in good standing is preferred, but not required.
