TRANSIT BUS OPERATOR
We're looking for individuals who thrive on growth, maintain a positive attitude, and prioritize systems and safety in everything they do. Our ideal Transit Bus Operator understands that their role is an essential part of the larger system, ensuring the smooth operation of county transportation and moving people efficiently.
As a Transit Bus Operator, you'll navigate the twists and turns of your prescribed route, picking up, transporting, and dropping off passengers on schedule while adhering to local, state, and federal laws and standards. Your journey will be guided by superior customer service, making every passenger's trip a pleasant experience. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to steer our seasonal operator training efforts, sharing your expertise and fostering a culture of continuous learning.


START DATE

Our next Trainee's class will begin on April 7th. All employees go through 2 - 5 weeks of training depending on their level of experience.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Safe Driving - Operate buses safely while adhering to traffic laws.
  • Timely Service - Maintain schedules and follow assigned routes.
  • Customer Assistance - Provide excellent service, including boarding support, fare handling, and answering questions.
  • Vehicle Checks - Perform pre/post-trip inspections, report issues, and ensure cleanliness.
  • Enforce Safety - Follow safety protocols, enforce regulations, and handle emergencies calmly.
  • Accessibility Support - Assist disabled passengers in compliance with ADA policies.
  • Trip Guidance - Provide travel planning and route information to passengers.
  • Equipment Use - Operate transit systems like fare boxes, dispatch tools, and security cameras.
  • Professional Interaction - Communicate effectively with dispatch and passengers
  • Accurate Reporting - Complete and submit required paperwork, including reports and inspections.
  • Skill Growth - Attend training and assist in roles like dispatcher or driver trainer when needed.
  • Team Values - Uphold Core Transit Values and other policies.
  • Additional Duties - Perform tasks assigned to support transit operations.

CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of traffic regulations and public safety protocols.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and resolve passenger concerns effectively.

KWOLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Transit Knowledge - Learn operating rules, regulations, routes, and safety practices for transit vehicle operation.
  • License and Testing - Maintain a CDL license and pass required DOT physical exams and drug/alcohol tests.
  • Effective Operation - Operate buses safely and detect traffic hazards.
  • Regulatory Understanding - Comprehend federal/state traffic laws and transit policies.
  • Interpersonal Skills - Exhibit courtesy and professionalism when assisting passengers and performing duties.
  • Physical Capability - Sit for long periods and assist passengers as needed, including under challenging weather and road conditions.
  • Environmental Adaptability - Manage exposure to dust, grease, and moving bus components.
  • Flexible Availability - Have personal transportation for early or late shifts.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent sitting and driving a vehicle.
  • Occasional physical tasks such as bending, pulling, pushing, and light lifting (under 15 lbs).
  • Requires occasional use of stairs, reaching above shoulder height, and assisting passengers when necessary.
  • No heavy/moderate lifting or climbing required.

This role involves continuous work indoors with occasional tasks outdoors, often exposed to dust, vibrations, and slippery surfaces. Drivers must handle frequent noise and occasional use of solvents while managing early or late shifts. The position requires exceptional focus, working alone continuously, and clear vision and hearing to maintain safety and service standards.


COMPREHENSIVE PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

  • Must pass a detailed background check.
  • Must successfully complete a Department of Transportation Drug & Alcohol test.
  • Must undergo a CDL Medical Exam to confirm fitness for duty.
  • Reference checks will be conducted to verify qualifications and experience.
