Position Summary
University of Detroit Mercy Law Clinical Fellows gain valuable experience and mentoring in clinical pedagogy and in their substantive area of practice. This position will support the Conviction Integrity Clinic (CIC), a collaboration between Detroit Mercy Law and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office Conviction Integrity Unit (Wayne CIU), and the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office Conviction Integrity Unit (Oakland CIU).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The Fellow’s duties include clinical teaching and student supervision in conjunction with clinic directors, and participation in the operation and development of the Conviction Integrity Clinic.
- The clinic provides students with the opportunity to help incarcerated individuals with felony convictions who claim innocence and who otherwise may not have access to legal services. The goal of this course is to educate law students about the issues which lead to wrongful convictions and to engage students directly in the review of actual innocence claims made by individuals who have been convicted of a crime.
- In general, Clinical Fellows have enjoyed success on the national job market and are teaching in clinics at law schools across the country. This Fellow will oversee and mentor students participating in the Conviction Integrity Clinic.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education – A juris doctorate degree.
- Employment -Two years to five years (Equivalent combination of education and related legal employment).
- The fellowship is an in-person, 2-year appointment that will begin in late summer 2025, or as soon thereafter as the position can be filled. Candidates must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Strong writing skills required.
Preferred Qualifications
- The Clinical Fellows Program is designed to fully support attorneys wishing to explore the possibility of a career in clinical teaching.
- Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to public interest lawyering and potential for scholarship and success as a clinical teacher.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates must hold a J.D. degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school and at least two years of relevant experience. Strong writing skills are required.
Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Work Environment
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Licenses/Certifications
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State Bar of Michigan.
Salary/Pay Information
Commensurate with experience
Anticipated Schedule
Full time 40-hour/week schedule, including attending class and being available to students. Position is primarily in-person with the option for some remote work.
