Position Title: CDL-A Deliver Driver

Department: Transportation

FLSA Status: Full Time Hourly/Non-Exempt

Schedule: 40 Hours per Week/Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm (Includes 30-minute unpaid meal break). Schedule may vary slightly depending on daily assigned routes, but no nights, overnights, or weekends.

WHO WE ARE:

Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for-profit organization leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region, by partnership with others in our community, through education, advocacy, and distribution of nutritious food. We partner with 360 community partners in the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

The core of our work is achieved by partnering with local agencies that distribute food to individuals and families in need. The key partners that make up our emergency food network are food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters. Other not-for-profit agencies such as day care centers, rehabilitation centers, senior centers, and group homes are able to utilize membership as a way to supplement their agency food needs.

Hunger is a very serious problem in the United States today. Despite its great wealth, an estimated one in eight Americans rely on emergency food assistance. Among the thousands of people who depend on charitable food programs in central and northern New York, and the Mohawk Valley:

· 29% are children 18 or younger

· 10% are without health insurance

· 68% have been unemployed for more than two years

· 32% have a working family member

· 91% are below the federal poverty line

41% earn less than $12,000 annually 

POSITION SUMMARY

The CDL-A Delivery Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation and delivery of food products to various distribution sites and partner agencies throughout Central New York. This role requires adherence to all traffic and transportation laws, as well as Food Bank policies and procedures related to vehicle operation and food safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operate Food Bank vehicles, primarily Class A trucks, for the purpose of transporting and delivering food and related products. Report any issues or problems to the Transportation Manager
  • Perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure proper operating condition of the vehicle and compliance with safety standards.
  • Assist at partner agency sites by loading and unloading vehicles, ensuring the secure and safe transport of goods, and verify load accuracy against shipping documents. This can include verify counts, record shortages/overages, record product damages on invoice, etc.
  • Complete pick-up runs from donor partners and ensure delivery to the Food Bank.
  • Maintain accurate driving and delivery records, including times of delivery and mileage.
  • Communicate with warehouse staff and partner agencies to coordinate pickups and deliveries.
  • Provide excellent customer service to partner agencies, representing the Food Bank in a professional manner at all times.
  • Participate in training related to food handling and safety procedures.
  • Assist with loading and unloading warehouse inventory, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned to help and support the mission of the Food Bank.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 60+ pounds regularly.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving and to stand and walk during loading and unloading.
  • Comfort with navigating and maneuvering the vehicle in various weather conditions and traffic scenarios.
  • Ability to pass Department of Transportation (DOT) required physical.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid CDL-A license.
  • Clean driving record.
  • DOT Medical Card.
  • Food Safety Certification (ServSafe) upon hire, and annually thereafter.
  • This position will receive a pre-employment drug test (drivers only) and background check. Food Bank of Central New York complies with all applicable state and federal laws pertaining to drug testing and background checks, including Article 23-A.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • One year of experience driving commercial vehicles preferred.
  • Previous experience in delivery and logistics preferred.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of transportation corridors of Central and Northern New York State preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellent math skills.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and vehicle maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with GPS and route management tools.
  • Bi-or multi-lingual preferred.
