Description

Job Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to provide fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services to the public.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs firefighting and medical emergency services by extinguishing fires from structures and vehicles, effectively operating equipment, evaluating emergency scenes, delivering medical care to victims, and assisting in hazardous material operations.
  • Participates in required training classes and physical fitness programs.
  • Performs daily station activities by completing incident reports and daily logs, entering records of equipment checks and repairs, and maintaining the station house and grounds.
  • Provides community services by assisting citizens with questions and fire protection issues, participating in school safety programs, conducting station tours and equipment demonstrations, and educating the public.
  • Serves on employee team by assisting in improvements of existing city and departmental policies and functions.

Performs other similar duties as required.


Knowledge:

  • Fire safety and education;
  • Geography of city;
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Firefighter I & II standards.

Skills:

  • Mechanical repairs;
  • Using computers and applicable software applications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.


Requirements

Licensing and Certifications:

  • North Carolina Firefighter I and II;
  • North Carolina Emergency Medical Responder;
  • Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations Level Certification;
  • National Incident Management System 100 & 200;
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.


Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

Incumbents are subject to the physically hazardous and life-threatening conditions in the line of duty and are subject to the weather, as the job requires actions in any weather condition.
