Position Summary:
The Junior Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineer is a dual role between the two disciplines. The candidate must be an energetic, self-starter able to support manufacturing and perform mechanical systems engineering for state of the art near eye imaging hardware. For manufacturing they will be responsible for assisting in Vuzix’s manufacturing processes, to support the direct supply chain issues from receipt of goods through the manufacturing, and for the assembly process to outgoing shipments. Will troubleshoot and diagnose assembly processes and reduce total defects through the analysis of data and corrective actions. For mechanical they will be responsible for supporting the various project groups in the way of CAD design and documentation, laboratory work, testing, and prototyping. They will collaborate within their own team as well as Electrical, Optical, and Quality Eng to support tasks within both R&D and Production.
This position will also support the functions of the R&D – Mechanical Department to meet the requirements of the relevant ISO 9001:2015 standards based on the Quality Objectives established by Top Management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and/or enhance manufacturing processes to assemble a bill of materials into a final product.
- Utilize methods for waste minimization within a manufacturing system and address productivity.
- Lead process improvements and controls through use of Six Sigma analysis and inspection/validation techniques.
- Document Corrective Actions and Preventative Actions.
- Generate, validate, and update as needed assembly work instructions in a clear and presentable configuration.
- Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
- Support both assembly floor priorities and longer-term development project activities.
- Design and modify mechanical portions of existing and future products using SolidWorks CAD software.
- Design, assemble, and test prototypes/mock-ups using 3D printing and other rapid prototyping techniques
- Gather the necessary information and create the engineering documentation to submit and implement engineering changes (ECO/ECN).
- Meet required ISO 9001:2015 standards and necessary training based on the relevant Quality Objectives.
Minimal Qualifications:
- 1-2 years’ experience in new product introduction and/or sustaining engineering.
- Minimum Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in mechanical engineering.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks and PDM.
- Use of techniques such as additive manufacturing/3D printing to create models, various fixtures, etc.
- Understanding and application of GD&T.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and time management skills with the ability to solve problems and multi-task in a fast-moving environment.
- Experience in utilizing automation such as robotic assistance and metered dispensing systems, PLC, and Vision Systems as utilized for aiding productivity in manufacturing.
- Operation and use of 3D printers as well as design integration/application of 3D printed parts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of standard manufacturing techniques such as fastening, structural adhesive bonding, hand assembly/low volume operations and tools and functional product testing.
- Experience with precision alignments, tolerance analysis, and associated documentation control.
- Experience with design and reliability testing as well as design of experiment.
- Knowledge of Six Sigma analysis and methods for process improvement and control.
- Knowledge of incoming inspection and validation techniques, such as optical inspection and CMM.
- Basic knowledge of the requirements of an ERP system for product specifications and bills of materials and routings.
- Understanding of FEA application and able to create representative simulations.
- Opto-mechanical design and/or integration experience.
