JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction of the Radiologist, the Ultrasound Tech performs a variety of technical procedures applying Ultrasound for the purpose of detecting pathology. This role requires the ability to work with all groups of patient and physical conditions, to include adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. The Ultrasound Tech is responsible for delivering high quality service, and appropriate interaction with patients, their representatives, Physicians, and Medical Center coworkers. The Ultrasound Tech will safely manage the environment of care while providing patient exceptional care and services.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs high quality diagnostic procedures utilizing Transducer frequencies dependent upon the patient or procedure. 
  • Effectively manages and monitors safe equipment use during imaging. Produces diagnostic quality images prior to sending to PACS for interpretation.
  • Consistently uses correct scanning protocols. Shows ability to adapt imaging routines to special imaging situations. Has a good working knowledge of US imaging anatomy.
  • Reviews/completes appropriate paperwork on every patient as required, including exam scheduling, physician orders, department logs, records, consents, medical records, and charges. 
  • Prepares patient and area for procedure by positioning patient, adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into specified position and adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors.
  • Good working knowledge of RIS and PACS. Orders, starts, and completes exams. Charges supplies and documents medication. Sends images to PACS and reviews images.
  • Properly assembles images and requisitions, before submission to Radiologist for interpretation. Has all appropriate information before consulting a Radiologist.
  • Uses cautious judgment and tact when answering questions regarding diagnosis, physician orders or patient care to prevent compromising patient privacy, confidentiality, medical/legal information.
  • Consistently produces diagnostic quality images without assistance or supervision. Uses good judgment in seeking assistance or supervision when it is needed.
  • Performs all exams in an efficient and professional manner and effectively communicates with patients taking into consideration age, language, mental competency and emotional state.
  • Reports broken equipment, malfunctions, or observed hazards to supervisor.
  • Maintains work and equipment area to meet cleanliness and quality standards. 
  • Ensures that necessary supplies are readily available before starting procedures and assist in mandatory quality checks (i.e. out of date supply check, linen check, etc.)
  • Cleans up room as needed after each procedure.
  • Wears gloves, mask, eye shield and gowns when appropriate. Disposes of sharps, body fluids, contaminated supplies and linen in the proper manner.

  • Attends staff meetings; follows HIPAA guidelines; follows patient rights policy; complies with the compliance program; demonstrates knowledge of role in a disaster; demonstrates knowledge of fire and fire drill procedures; working knowledge of hospital emergency codes; always utilizes standard precautions in the clinical setting; safely manages the environment of care by demonstrating a working knowledge of the requirements of the: Life Safety program, Utilities Management program, Hazardous Materials program, Emergency Preparedness program, Safety Management program, Medical Equipment Management program, Security Management program.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

  • Adequate diagnostic ultrasound experience and proven competency as determined by the Ultrasound Supervisor
  • Minimum 1 year experience as an Ultrasound Tech
  • Proficient Computer Skills

Education: 

  • Completion of an AMA accredited school of Ultrasound Licensure/Certifications:
  • Professional registry with the ARDMS, including RVT (vascular) certification. BLS from AHA.
  • Or must obtain RVT certification within 6 months of employment.
