· Contribute to the best and largest firm in the solar industry with a great reputation built over the past 10 years.
· Take pride that our services really are the best in the industry. There is no “fake it until you make it" here!
Description
We are seeking a Civil Engineering Manager to coordinate and oversee civil and environmental tasks on ground-mounted solar PV and other renewable energy projects across multiple states. This role encompasses three core areas of responsibility:
1. Feasibility & Conceptual Design (in-house): Lead early-stage planning and strategy for civil and environmental feasibility.
2. Quality Control & Coordination: Provide technical oversight, review, and coordination of civil deliverables created by external consultants and sub-consultants.
3. Managing the EOR (Outsourced Design): Act as the main point of contact for outsourced civil engineering services where another firm signs and seals the drawings.
4. Collaboration with Electrical Design: Partner with our internal electrical engineering teams to optimize equipment placement, routing, and infrastructure for more efficient, resilient project designs.
Pure Power Engineering performs initial feasibility and conceptual work in-house. The Civil Engineering Manager will ensure that all outsourced deliverables meet regulatory requirements, adhere to project specifications, and align with our standards—while also contributing to electrical design efficiency and safety.
Key Responsibilities
1. Feasibility & Conceptual Design
a. Civil Feasibility:
i. Oversee conceptual site layouts, preliminary grading, and initial stormwater ideas for proposed solar projects.
ii. Identify civil constraints (e.g., topography, drainage, access) to guide early project decisions.
b. Environmental Input:
i. Provide high-level environmental guidance (e.g., identifying wetlands, sensitive habitats) during conceptual planning.
ii. Flag potential permitting challenges early to reduce redesign and schedule impacts.
c. Prepare technical specifications for geotechnical and other related civil studies (Hydrology, SWPP, erosion control, etc.)
2. Quality Control & Coordination
a. Technical Review of Deliverables:
i. Review site plans, grading drawings, drainage analyses, and stormwater/erosion control designs from external consultants for accuracy, constructability, and regulatory compliance.
ii. Coordinate with external civil consultants to resolve design conflicts and maintain consistency with Pure Power Engineering standards.
b. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration:
i. Work with in-house project management and other engineering disciplines to ensure smooth integration of civil designs into overall project objectives.
ii. Facilitate project meetings (internal and external) to address schedule, design updates, and technical issues.
c. Permitting & Regulatory Support:
i. Compile necessary civil documentation for local, state, and federal permits.
ii. Engage with local professionals, as needed, to incorporate region-specific requirements into final design packages.
d. Remain up-to-date on new technologies and regulatory conditions including building codes, fire codes, utility requirements, vendor qualifications, industry best practices, safety standards, and relevant standards development.
3. Managing the EOR (Outsourced Design)
a. Oversight & Coordination of Final Design:
i. Act as the primary liaison between Pure Power Engineering and the licensed external engineering firms responsible for stamping and sealing civil drawings.
ii. Communicate project scope, conceptual parameters, and design criteria to ensure final designs align with in-house feasibility work.
b. Project Management & Integration:
i. Track schedules, deliverables, and budgets for outsourced civil design; ensure deadlines are met and costs are controlled.
ii. Consolidate external deliverables (e.g., stormwater reports, grading plans, erosion control drawings) and verify regulatory compliance.
c. Sign-Off & Documentation:
i. Confirm that outsourced civil engineering packages meet Pure Power Engineering’s quality expectations before submitting to clients or permitting agencies.
4. Collaboration with Electrical Design
a. Optimize Equipment Placement & Cable Runs
i. Partner with electrical teams to position inverters, transformers, and switchgear in locations that minimize conductor lengths and electrical losses.
ii. Plan site grading and road layouts that facilitate efficient underground cabling and ensure safe, accessible infrastructure for maintenance.
iii. Provide civil engineering guidance on the design of PV systems including selecting racking/mounting equipment, designing access roads, drainage plans, performing relevant calculations, erosion prevention, and other tasks throughout the design and construction process.
b. Coordinate Trenching & Infrastructure
i. Work jointly on trench routing and conduit specifications to protect cables from shifting soil or erosion.
ii. Recommend backfill materials and compaction methods that reduce installation time and enhance system reliability.
c. Ensure Site Safety & Code Compliance
i. Verify clearance distances, setbacks, and emergency access requirements around electrical equipment.
ii. Coordinate with electrical engineers to incorporate environmental constraints (e.g., wetlands, wildlife habitats) into the overall design.
d. Other duties as assigned.
