Harbor’s Edge is a premier 5-star, resort-style Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) located alongside the beautiful harbor on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Virginia. Our community consists of 300 Independent Living Residential Units, a 33-bed (Medicare/private) Skilled Nursing Healthcare Unit, a 40-bed Assisted Living Unit, and 34-bed Memory Support Unit. 


We are seeking a highly qualified, part-time CDL Driver to join our team to assist in delivering an excellent transportation experience and care for our residents. The ideal candidates will have senior living experience (e.g., long-term care, assisted living, memory support) with a passion for working with an elderly population.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Transport residents to scheduled events in a safe, timely, respectful, and courteous manner.
  • Confirm transportation schedules as designated by the Activity and Resident Services staff - date, time, type, locations, residents participating, and directions for scheduled activities. Transport residents to and from events in safe, organized, and responsible fashion.  
  • Assist residents with boarding and exiting the bus, getting seated, or any other physical assistance needed. Respond promptly and communicate effectively should any medical situations or emergencies arise. 
  • Consistently demonstrate positive resident relations, quality care, and service excellence with residents, families, and the public. Continually maintain a positive, cheerful disposition and ensure communication is relayed in a positive, engaging manner.    
  • Maintain effective, prompt communication with Resident Services staff regarding work schedule, time off requests, resident relations, and condition of vehicles utilized. Provide receipts to the Resident Services Supervisor/Director in a timely manner for appropriate processing.
  • Ensure the interior of vehicles utilized are clean and well maintained during and following usage. Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for optimal passenger comfort.
  • Maintain simple vehicle operations including lights, brakes, horns, tire pressure and windshield wipers, and fill vehicles with fuel as needed. Report any vehicle concerns and/or needs for service maintenance, arranging any needed repairs. adjustments, or servicing in a timely manner with the Maintenance Department. 
  • Assist with other resident-related, clerical, and inventory duties as directed.   
  • Coordinate activities with other departments as needed.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • At least two (2) years of related work experience with the elderly and dementia populations. 
  • Current, valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class C with at least two years of driving experience as well as a good driving record, including no active suspensions or revocations. 
  • Current, valid non-commercial driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Current COVID-19 Vaccine is required to support the health and safety of our residents and staff.
  • Ensure that safety of residents, visitors, public, etc. is a priority, observing proper safety protocols and obeying all applicable driving laws.
  • Strong desire to work in a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). Able to work well with the elderly population in a courteous, friendly, positive manner, demonstrating patience, compassion, flexibility, adaptability, active listening, and effective interpersonal skills. 
  • Consistently perform duties with consideration for resident’s rights, demonstrating integrity and confidentiality in the care of the residents and in handling their health information and all personal/confidential information. Demonstrate service excellence through daily interactions.
  • Communicate effectively with all personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and the public demonstrating excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills. Demonstrate engaging and positive demeanor.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and time management skills. Able to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficient computer skills experience with electronic scheduling systems preferred. 
  • Able to exert a minimum of 50 lbs. of energy in order to assist elderly to and from vehicles, in and out of wheelchairs, walking aids, etc.. Able to sit and stand for extended periods of time, walk, climb stairs, reach, turn, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, balance, and maintain body equilibrium to prevent falls, reach over the head, push/pull, and grasp with both hands. 
  • Must have normal eyesight or use corrective glasses/lenses. Must have three-dimensional vision and ability to observe and identify surroundings, judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are, and to recognize colors. 
  • Able to distinguish sounds between normal tones, perceive the nature of sounds, comprehend and exchange ideas and detailed information verbally, as well as engage in activities to convey detailed or spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly, and/or quickly. Normal sense of touch and smell. 
  • Effectively operate company motor vehicles, computer, and other office equipment, to include grasping, fine manipulation, and repetitive motion.
