Position Overview
The Art Director will lead the creative direction and visual identity for Power to Decide and its sub brands, Bedsider.org and AbortionFinder.org. This role requires a strategic, highly organized, and innovative leader with expertise in graphic design, art direction, and brand storytelling.
The ideal candidate excels at transforming complex ideas into compelling visuals, ensuring brand consistency and strategic vision across all platforms while fostering innovation and audience engagement. They will oversee creative vendors and contractors, provide art direction for video and photo shoots, and design assets that support Power to Decide’s strategic intentions and brand elevation.
This position reports to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications.
Key Responsibilities
Creative Leadership and Brand Strategy
- Maintain and execute the visual identity for Power to Decide and its sub brands, Bedsider.org and AbortionFinder.org, ensuring a cohesive, compelling, and mission-aligned creative direction across all platforms.
- Evaluate and refine the creative branding of Power to Decide, with the potential to lead a brand refresh initiative that keeps the visual identity relevant, impactful, and resonant with key audiences.
- Audit and oversee brand consistency across all platforms and materials—including web, social media, digital tools, print collateral, and marketing campaigns.
- Ensure the consistent use of a user-centered, accessible, and inclusive design approach that emphasizes clarity, functionality, and meaningful engagement across digital and print.
Design and Content Creation
- Support the design and execution of all visual assets including animations, social media graphics, digital ads, reports, brochures, educational videos, and presentations.
- Ensure visual content meets ADA accessibility standards, including WCAG compliance for digital materials, to create inclusive and accessible designs.
- Provide art direction on video and photo shoots, ensuring all visuals align with brand identity, messaging, and audience engagement goals.
- Collaborate with the Senior Manager of Video Production to develop strong visual concepts for video content and guide graphic elements for post-production to maintain brand consistency.
- Adapt files for multiple platforms, including Canva Pro, to empower staff in co-creating branded content.
- Occasionally serve as on-screen talent for branded video content, if comfortable and appropriate.
Collaboration and Cross-Functional Partnerships
- Consult with internal teams to develop engaging creative assets that support strategic priorities in policy, communications, health education, digital engagement, and fundraising.
- Partner with the Senior Director of UX Research and Chief Operating and Technology Officer to develop creative assets that support content strategy and a sustainable economic model, adjusting priorities based on audience research insights.
- Provide creative input in cross-functional meetings to ensure alignment with organizational goals and audience engagement strategies.
Vendor and Project Management
- Oversee the planning and execution of in-house creative projects while managing external creative partners as needed, including graphic designers, illustrators, animators, and photographers.
- Source and vet vendors, negotiate contracts, and manage project budgets to ensure efficient and cost-effective outcomes.
- Review and approve vendor deliverables to ensure alignment with brand standards, creative vision, and organizational goals.

The ideal candidate will have:
- A bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years of experience in graphic design and art direction, or 10-12+ years of equivalent professional experience without a degree.
- Demonstrated experience in a creative leadership role (minimum of 5 years preferred).
- A strong portfolio showcasing expertise in digital design, video, print design, branding, and creative storytelling.
- Ability to translate complex ideas into compelling visuals that align with organizational goals and resonate with diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to lead creative projects independently while collaborating across teams.
- Understanding of ADA accessibility guidelines and demonstrated experience ensuring inclusive and accessible design.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in writing, editing, storyboarding, and verbal communication.
- Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring visually appealing, brand-consistent, accessible, and inclusive materials.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
- A learning mindset, with a willingness to seek continuous feedback and adapt in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD, Premiere Pro or After Effects) and experience working with Canva Pro and, if applicable, tools like CapCut to support internal content creation.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace, ChatGPT, and work management tools (preferably Monday.com).
- Ability to work remotely effectively and travel up to 10 times per year, if necessary.
Salary and Benefits
The Art Director is an exempt position. Salary is based on market factors and individual experience and abilities. The starting salary range for this position is $108,800 to $125,300 annually.
