Planet Aid is a nonprofit organization that collects and recycles used textiles to protect the environment and support sustainable development in impoverished communities around the world. We are seeking a full-time Transportation Manager who will report to the Operations Manager, in our facility located in Elkridge, MD.
The Transportation Manager interfaces with both the sales and operations teams to ensure a timely and complete collection of clothing donations. This is a leadership role with significant interaction with drivers and Territory Managers. Responsibilities include personnel management, dispatch, routing duties, managing labor costs, status reporting, and problem-solving with regular communication to management. The position will also contribute to process development within operations for improving the quality of service and to provide preventative solutions to problems.
The Transportation Manager needs to have good routing experience, excellent communication, and people skills, and be able to run routes when needed. The Transportation Manager will oversee roughly 30 drivers and vehicles, including box trucks and tractor trailers.
The Transportation Manager supports the productivity of the region including acting as a manager on duty in the Operations Manager’s absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise drivers and transportation staff.
- Ensure all drivers work productively, proficiently, and safely.
- Optimize routes to increase productivity.
- Managing vehicle licensure, registration, and DOT documentation together with our Safety Coordinator.
- Ensuring all fleet members have proper licensure and up-to-date training.
- Managing the transportation team, including the full employee life cycle: timekeeping, staffing, and performance management.
- Screening, Interviewing, hiring, and training new drivers.
- Arrange unscheduled box inspections and monitor missed stops.
- Maintain company vehicles.
- Monitoring and maintaining up-to-date information Azuga tracking system on a daily basis.
- Servicing routes when drivers call out or are on vacation.
- Developing methods to decrease cost and improve efficiency.
- Managing all safety and legal incidents, including all incident/safety/police reporting, following up, and appearing in court as needed.
- Maintain our database with any information regarding our sites.
- Performing safety meetings with all drivers on a weekly or monthly basis.
- Supporting the management of the unit including acting as a manager on duty in the Operations Manager’s absence
- Other responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION: Associates degree or two (2) additional years of experience in the field.
EXPERIENCE: Five (5+) years of transportation logistics/routing experience; One (1+) year of commercial driving experience; Four 4+) years of supervisory experience preferably in a similar setting.
Must hold a valid driver’s license and be insurable according to Planet Aid’s guidelines. Must be able to obtain a DOT medical card and meet company insurability standards. CDL A preferred.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Proficient in computer skills and applications such as Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with database record keeping to record and track information, as well as other online applications such as mapping and routing tools. Must be detailed oriented, self-driven, results-oriented, and motivated to work with minimal supervision. Ability to prioritize workflow and effectively delegate tasks. Must be flexible in adapting to changing requirements and priorities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting: Must tolerate frequent periods of resting entire body weight in a driving position without change in position.
Walking: Must tolerate frequent periods of moving the entire body from one location to another with the use of legs
Lifting: Must tolerate frequent periods of lifting and tossing bags with an average weight ranging from 25 to 50 lbs.
Pushing: Must tolerate occasional periods of exerting force upon or against an object to move it away from the body. Average weight 170 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office/business/school settings with some exposure to the elements depending on workload. Planet Aid will provide PPE equipment such as protective eyewear, earplugs and gloves and any other clothing needed to perform job. Travel required to Planet Aid’s operations, and to sites in the region. (25%).
