The temporary summer assistant role is a 10-week, 20-hours per week temporary position. The position pays $16.93 per hour.
The Mobile Services Summer Assistant will support the Mobile Services Team mission by assisting in delivering the Library to patrons in the community. A major component of this role is promoting summer reading, programming, library checkout and other activities at recurring bookmobile stops and outreach events.
We are hiring for two Temporary Summer Assistants with similar duties but different schedules.
Schedule 1 & 2: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, with some weekend hours for 20 hours a week. The exact schedule would be determined between the supervisor and employee at the time of hire.
Job Duties (Essential Functions)
- Encourage children, teens, and families to participate in the summer reading program. This includes, but is not limited to, in-person engagement, registering through an online platform, and redeeming prizes in the library, in the community, and online.
- Work alongside Mobile Services staff to setup and breakdown Bookmobile stops, outreach events, Books to Go, Lobby Stops, and Pop in at the Park sites.
- Provide information and resources at bookmobile stops and outreach events that increase awareness of the Kansas City Public Library and connect patrons of all ages to relevant library programs and services.
- Assist Mobile Services staff in keeping track of statistics, maintaining accurate records and entering Summer Reading Program data onto the platform.
- Share community resources and information with the public at Mobile services outreach stops and events and connect patrons of all ages to relevant library programs and services.
- Maintaining patron privacy and library standards while using Workflows to check out items to patrons
- Work alongside Mobile Services staff to run returned items through the AMH (Automated Materials Handler) from Bookmobile stops, Books to Go sites, and Lobby Stop sites. Assist Mobile Services staff with condition checking items and shelving returned materials to their proper locations.
- Capture pictures and videos from summer events.
- Ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with patrons.
- Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
- Basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
- Willingness to be photographed and recorded for Library social media posts.
- Ability to work outdoors in variable summer weather conditions for up to four consecutive hours.
- Ability to be comfortable working in a tight space on the Bookmobile.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.
- Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working/volunteering with children, teens, and marginalized community members.
- Community outreach and engagement.
- Fluency in a language other than English.
Work Environment
Work is performed at the Library’s Truman Road Facility and throughout the Library district. Workspace is shared with co-workers in a warehouse environment, other work will be performed in public spaces among patrons from a diverse socio-economic community
