Description

This position is seasonal and runs for two weeks during the summer: June 23rd- June 27th and July 14th- July 18th. Any other work will need to be applied for through the proper department.


GENERAL FUNCTION

Camp Kaleidoscope is a camp for children who identify in the LGBTQ+ community. The goal of this camp is to create a safe place where campers can experience joy in recreation. The counselor for Camp Kaleidoscope provides a safe and enjoyable recreational experience for the campers in this camp. Counselors are there to provide instruction, supervision and engagement of campers. Counselors will help with many activities including swimming, cooking, arts and crafts, group games, and group discussions and activities. Counselors should be able to help children feel comfortable and safe in camp. Counselors should also be prepared to assist in behavioral support of campers as needed.


KNOW- HOW

Incumbent must have confidence and proven experience with children with a variety of ages and ability levels. Applicants should have the ability to effectively communicate, problem solve and demonstrate sound judgment. Must be able to adapt or modify activities, follow written behavior plans and ability to work independently. Must possess good safety awareness, judgment, and problem-solving skills and be able to work in all weather conditions.  


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the planning and implementation of a camp program that fits into the values and philosophy of the YMCA.
  • Provide support to children as needed, while also maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Responsible for the safety of the children in the camp always.
  • Assist campers in cooking, arts and crafts, and group activities, while ensuring emotional behavioral regulation.
  • Must attend all staff meetings and training.
  • Responsible for accurately completing and turning in timecards on time.
  • Responsible for following the dress code as described in the employee handbook.
  • Assist with supervision of campers in the pool.
  • Take a leadership role in all camp activities.
  • Must work all scheduled hours.
  • Help plan weekly activities schedule.
  • Communicate all needs, concerns and requests of the parents, campers and general day camp to the Larkin’s Place Director.
  • Responsible for any other duties deemed necessary for a job well done.

When the Inclusion Counselor duties are fulfilled successfully, the YMCA will be viewed and respected as a community leader in recreational programs and activities for those individuals with developmental disabilities. Participants will have the opportunity to reach their full potential and become more deeply connected to the organizations. Therefore, successful fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

  1. Increased participation in programs.
  2. Participants and/or parents become volunteers and donors, and more involved.
