Description

This position is seasonal and runs for two weeks during the summer: June 23rd- June 27th and July 14th- July 18th. Any other work will need to be applied for through the proper department.


GENERAL FUNCTION

The Camp Kaleidoscope Coordinator is responsible for helping to plan and implement the activities, schedule, and safety in this camp. This camp is for children who identify in the LGBTQ+ community. This camp takes place at an offsite location. The coordinator is responsible for safety on the bus, at the camp site, and at the YMCA. This camp includes swimming, walking, games, meal preparation, and group discussions and activities surrounding the LGBTQ+ experience.


CAMP OVERVIEW

The Stephens Family YMCA runs over 100 camps each summer, including a variety of sports and specialty camps. This camp is focused on creating a safe place for all our children, particularly in the LGBTQ+ community. This camp runs for 2 weeks during the summer, and has two age groups, 2-5th grade, and 6-9th grade. 


REQUIREMENTS

This position requires that the applicant be at least eighteen years of age. Applicants must have experience working in a camp setting or comparable job experiences. Applicants must also have experience working in a team in a work setting. Applicants will need to be able to work 40 hours a week during the two weeks of camp, from 8:15- 4:15pm. 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. 
  2. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.
  3. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.  


RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for the planning and development of weekly specialty camp activities and schedules. 
  2. Responsible for leading a team of counselors in the facilitation of camp activities.
  3. Responsible for the safety of children in the camps at all times.
  4. Responsible for managing camper’s behaviors and disciplining challenging behavior when necessary.
  5. Responsible for adjusting activities and schedules to meet the needs of camper with disabilities.
  6. Responsible for attending all staff meetings and trainings.
  7. Responsible for following proper drop-off and pick-up procedures of campers each day.
  8. Responsible for leading field trips and following proper protocols and procedures away from the YMCA.
  9. Responsible for working scheduled hours and accurate completion of time cards.
  10. Responsible for effectively communicating with parents of children in the camp programs. 
  11. Responsible for communicating all needs, concerns and requests of the parents, campers, and general camp to the Larkin’s Place Director.
  12. Responsible for any other duties deemed necessary by the Larkin’s Place Director.


EFFECT ON END RESULT

When this position’s duties are fulfilled successfully, the YMCA camping programs will be viewed as a quality day camp that focuses on the safety of children and improve the quality of life in the Champaign County area. Campers will improve their skills based on the specific specialty camps, acquire an understanding of YMCA values, an appreciation of others, and a sense of belonging.

Salary Description
$17.00 / hr
