What You’ll Do
This position will support the US Army Corps of Engineers ACE-IT Program. The Active Directory & Microsoft Exchange / Messaging Systems Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, deployment, configuration, and maintenance of enterprise messaging systems, including Microsoft Exchange (2013/2016/2019), Office 365, and associated directory services. The engineer ensures messaging environments are highly available, secure, and optimized for performance across multi-domain, enterprise-scale infrastructures. This role involves close coordination with IT teams to support directory services, email systems, and messaging infrastructure for geographically dispersed users.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert-level operational and engineering support for Microsoft Exchange On-Prem & Exchange Online environments, including clustered and high-availability configurations
- Design and implement upgrades, migrations, and new deployments of Exchange and related services
- Monitor the health and performance of messaging and directory systems using native and third-party tools
- Manage and maintain Active Directory, including DNS, Group Policies, Trusts, Replication, and Forest/Domain health across multiple sites
- Perform scripting and automation using PowerShell for Exchange, Active Directory, and related systems
- Providing day to day support of email related issues (message traces, creation mailboxes, DLLs, Dynamic DLLs, etc.)
- Management and support of SPF, DKIM & DMARC configurations
- Management and support of large Public Folder deployment
- Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies for messaging and directory systems
- Support email security infrastructure, such as anti-spam gateways (e.g., Cisco IronPort)
- Create, update, and maintain technical documentation including configuration baselines, process diagrams, and runbooks
- Assist in planning and executing migrations to newer platforms (e.g., Exchange 2019 or Microsoft 365 Exchange Online)
- Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams to ensure system integrations, security compliance, and service continuity
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Minimum of 6–8 years of experience with Microsoft Exchange (2013/2016/2019) and Office 365 environments
- Proven experience with Active Directory architecture, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and replication in multi-site environments
- Strong experience using PowerShell for administration, automation, and reporting
- In-depth knowledge of Windows Server 2016, 2019, and/or 2022 environments
- Experience planning and executing complex upgrades or migrations in enterprise messaging systems
- Familiarity with monitoring tools, mail routing, clustering, high-availability configurations, and load balancing
- Ability to obtain and maintain a federal government security clearance & DoD IAT 8570 certification (e.g. CompTIA Security+)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant Microsoft certifications (e.g., Exchange Server, Azure, Intune, Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate)
- Experience with hybrid Exchange/Office 365 deployments
- Familiarity with Cisco IronPort or similar email gateway technologies
- Prior experience supporting federal government or large enterprise IT environments
