About the job:

The Springboard Diving Specialty Instructor position will teach children the basics of spring board diving both on the low board and high board in the following areas: approach, hurdle, take-off, front jumps and dives, while also having a strong eye to safety. This instructor is responsible for organizing lesson plans in a progressive and safe manner.


A day in the life:

  • Plan and instruct basic diving and water safety programs in accordance with JSFC.
  • Provide for the progress, safety, comfort and enjoyment of class participants.
  • Evaluate participants and complete progress reports and cards.
  • Communicate with lesson participants and parents concerning specific lesson and related program information.
  • Participate in regular swim instructor in-service training.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Schedule: 

April 4- May 16:  Fridays 4:00- 6:30pm 

June 17- August 21: Tuesdays  4:00- 6:00pm, Thursdays 4:00- 6:00 pm, and Friday 11:30am -1:00pm

Requirements

What you'll need for success:

Strong Knowledge of:

  • Recreational activity for which providing instruction and/or supervision;
  • Theory, principle and practices for specialized area; and
  • Strong knowledge of diving techniques, including skills in the following areas: approach, hurdle, take-off, front jumps and dives.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Strong personal swimming skills
  • Plan, organize and lead classes toward determined goals
  • Communicate effectively with and to motivate people of all ages and abilities, particularly children
  • Physically perform the duties associated with this position
  • Work cooperatively with others and create a positive, constructive relationship with staff and the general public.

What we’re looking for:

Education, Experience and Training:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent; college coursework or vocations training with emphasis in related field preferred; AND
  2. Two (2) years of professional level experience in area of specialty area; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of experience and training.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of Aquatic Coordinator.


Supervision Exercised:

Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this position; however provides some leadership and direction to assistants and volunteers.


Working Conditions:

  • Depending upon job assignment, duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Work schedule generally requires weekday hours with occasional weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to walk and stand for sustained period of time with frequent climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting.
  • The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time.
  • Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling in order to store, set-up, and clean-up equipment and supplies.
  • Exposure to large crowds, uncooperative or difficult individuals, exposure to illness, and periods of continuous demand.
