Description
SUMMARY
The Middle School science program promotes skill-building, inquiry-based learning, and rigorous scientific exploration. The MS science position requires faculty to work collaboratively to build and implement a lively, relevant program in the fields of life, earth, environmental, and physical science. The faculty member will join experienced grade level and science teaching teams in a community that has high expectations of equity and student engagement.
This is a full-time, 10-month, exempt position. Some evening and weekend work is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The school seeks an outstanding educator for Middle School Science, whose duties comprise:
- Teaching four sections of Middle School Science across two grade levels;
- Creating a classroom environment that promotes the development of process skills utilized in the scientific process and in experimental design;
- Utilizing appropriate supporting content across grade levels:
- 5th: Survey year encompassing physical, life, and environmental science with hands-on activities including working in the out-of-doors;
- 6th: earth science activities including energy, climate, and water and soil studies.
- 7th: life science with an emphasis on interactions between living systems;
- 8th: physical science using modeling and direct student observations and measurements to build understanding.
- Serving as a grade level advisor and team member managing all aspects of the grade level experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will:
- Have the optimism, desire, and positive enthusiasm to work with Middle School students and to play an important role in the life of the Middle School.
- Demonstrate competency with student-centered technology, an interest in advancing and supporting its use to enhance student learning, and the desire to employ technology to connect with students;
- Have a rich background in the teaching of environmental, general science, life science, and/or physical science through inquiry and exploration;
- Collaborate with other members of the Science department to design and implement curriculum as well as employ an equity lens, recent research, and national standards proven to lead to effective science learning;
- Have the ability to support students in their acquisition and development of key process skills related to scientific work;
- Be enthusiastic about creating student-centered lessons that allow young learners to implement inquiry-based lessons in a variety of ways;
- Have 3-5 years of prior teaching experience with Middle School students;
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and spoken and a highly refined work ethic and positive spirit;
- Be motivated to find ways to contribute to the life of the School through coaching, clubs, etc.;
