Job Summary

The Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, preparing, and processing patient specimens for laboratory testing. This role ensures high-quality patient care by following proper specimen collection techniques, maintaining accurate records, and upholding laboratory safety standards. The position requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and adherence to healthcare regulations.


Essential Functions

  • Perform venipuncture (as needed), capillary puncture, and other specimen collection procedures.
  • Properly label, handle, and transport specimens to the laboratory for processing (as needed).
  • Ensure accurate patient identification and maintain specimen integrity.
  • Prepare and process specimens for testing, including centrifugation and aliquoting.
  • Prepare and process specimens for send out to appropriate reference labs.
  • Maintain phlebotomy and send-out supplies and ensure proper inventory levels.
  • Enter patient and specimen data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Assist laboratory staff with clerical duties and basic laboratory tasks.
  • Follow infection control and safety protocols to prevent contamination and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to all regulatory standards, including COLA, HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA guidelines.

Requirements

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures.
  •  Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Education: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy or medical laboratory assistant program preferred.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent preferred.
