Job Title: Snow Safety Technician
Department: Ski Patrol/ Snow Safety

Status: Seasonal FT

Reporting To: Snow Safety Director


Position Overview:


The Snow Safety Technician will report to the Snow Safety Director and will be set up to learn and assist in all aspects of the avalanche forecasting, rescue, and hazard reduction programs.


The Snow Safety Technician will be a member of a team who will have dual responsibilities to the Patrol and Snow Safety Programs. Each Snow Safety Technician will be assigned with a Snow Safety Supervisor for scheduled shift and assist with assigned tasks to achieve the objectives outlined in the expectations, requirements, and qualifications.


It will be expected that the technician overtime begins to demonstrate skill sets, and displays understanding and knowledge of department and operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists with mentorship in the production of the morning and afternoon operational Avalanche Hazard and Risk
  • Assessment that includes primary and secondary terrain, SR 158, DMI, Davenport, and Wolf Canyon.
  • Assists with mentorship in the maintenance of on-mountain weather stations and snow study plots.
  • Assists with mentorship in the collection of snow, weather, and avalanche observations.
  • Assists with mentorship in the management of explosives inventory.
  • Assists with mentorship in the organizing of mitigation efforts for the resort and state highway when needed.
  • Assists with mentorship in the maintenance of avalanche sign lines and access gates including SR 158.
  • Assists Explosive Cache Manager, Build Team, Lead, Assistant, and Apprentice Blasters.
  • Provide emergency first aid response, evacuation and transportation to guests and employees at Powder Mountain.
  • Customer service– present an image of courtesy, efficiency and competence. Provide friendly assistance and advice to guests. Handle situations involving emergencies, violations, or crowd control in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism, recognize areas of improvement, and takes appropriate actions to implement improvement.
  • Through job specific work experience begins to show understanding of all on-snow related operations of the resort, including opening and closing procedures, avalanche mitigation, emergency management and critical incident response plans.
  • Commitment to the success of individual employees, the department and the resort as a whole.
  • Effective speaking and, listening skills.
  • Ability to deal with unusual stress from high business volumes, deadlines, continual work with public, winter conditions, overnight requirements and commuting to/from the resort.
  • Displays a positive attitude, eager to lean, organized, team work, and good decision-making skill sets.

Requirements and/or Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 full time seasons of previous patrol/snow safety work, and mitigation experience.
  • Met qualifications for assistant blaster. (Experience in other operations)
  • Valid OEC or higher certification.
  • Holds a current Level 1 Avalanche and Rescue Skills certification and is working towards a Pro 1.
  • Holds a current ATF Possessor Clearance Document.
  • Basic knowledge of terrain and avalanche paths encompassed in the resort and periphery.
  • Assists zone leads and line patrollers with required daily zone tasks.
  • Clearance for snowmobile diving through Powder Mountains ski patrol training program.
  • Commitment to the success of individual employees, the department and the resort as a whole.
  • Effective speaking and, listening skills.
  • Knowledge and the ability to show proficiency with computer skills such as utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel, Information Exchange, email, Airflare and 1Risk.
  • Willing to work weekends, holidays and potential days off as needed.
  • Adheres to the pre-discussed schedule to meet operational needs.
  • Assists in the attendance of daily meetings if scheduled to do so.
  • Understands and follows all resort policies and procedures.
  • Has a proper vehicle or other transportation method to the resort for scheduled shifts.

Physical Requirements:

  • Full range of body movements
  • Reach, push, pull, lift, and carry objects that may be heavy (40+lbs)
  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and twisting
  • Walk on even/uneven/slippery terrain
  • Climb/descend stairs/ladders
  • Manual dexterity to operate manual tools and power equipment on a constant basis
  • Safely handle hazardous materials

Working Environment:


Expected to be able to work in a multitude of outside mountain conditions. Periods of prolonged exposure to the elements such as warm and cold temps, heavy winds, intense precipitation, and poor visibility.

$28.50 - $40.00/hr
