Position Summary
Presentation High School in San Jose, California is seeking a long-term substitute Religious Studies Teacher beginning in August 2025–2026 school year. Actual dates to be determined. This teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous, and developmentally appropriate instruction in Religious Studies, including courses such as Moral Theology. The ideal candidate will be a practicing Roman Catholic with a strong foundation in Catholic theology and a commitment to fostering students’ academic and spiritual growth.
We are looking for an experienced, innovative teacher who is eager to develop classrooms of belonging where students are ready to take intellectual risks and put their learning into action in the “real” world.
Substitute teachers may also be requested to make themselves available in a reasonably timely manner for meetings with other faculty/staff regarding student support, interdepartmental collaboration, and also by students/parents at their request. Every effort may be made to accommodate substitute teachers’ schedules when scheduling these meetings.
Additional compensation is provided for professional development days, Back to School Night, Frosh Orientation, Graduation, etc. as applicable.
Duties and Specific Responsibilities
- Teach assigned Religious Studies courses, potentially including The Church, Moral Theology, and other department offerings.
- Demonstrate subject matter competency and the ability to communicate theological concepts to high school students.
- Devise and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning, promoting respect and order.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and assessments aligned with course objectives and student needs.
- Design and deliver curriculum using up-to-date pedagogical approaches, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support diverse learning needs, and culturally responsive teaching practices that honor and reflect the identities and lived experiences of all students.
- Provide appropriate support and availability to students outside of class time.
- Utilize Schoology (LMS) to distribute course materials and assignments, and PowerSchool (SIS) to grade and maintain an up-to-date gradebook.
- Communicate effectively with students and parents to support academic success and engagement.
- Collaborate with departmental colleagues and school leadership to ensure curricular alignment and academic excellence.
- Participate in professional development activities related to subject matter, pedagogy, and educational technology.
- Exercise professionalism in communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Required:
- Master’s Degree or Catechetical Certification with coursework in Theology, Spirituality, or Religious Education
- Practicing Roman Catholic with a strong foundation in Catholic theology
Preferred:
- Previous high school teaching experience
- Experience integrating educational technology in classroom instruction

The Religious Studies Teacher must be able to:
- Lift and/or carry moderate weight (up to 10 lbs.)

- Work with frequent interruptions
Work Environment
This position operates in a classroom and office setting. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.
