Health Inspector - Part-time

GENERAL PURPOSE 

The principal function of the Health Inspector is to ensure public establishments such as restaurants, food-manufacturing plants, grocery stores, public swimming pools and hotels (as examples) operate in a sanitary and safe way. Health inspectors respond to complaints or emergencies. When facilities do not comply with public health and sanitation laws, inspectors issue citations and inform the facility owner of the corrections needed to pass an inspection. Inspectors aid in the betterment of the community through consistent reinforcement of health mandates.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: 

Works under the supervision of the Building Commissioner.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED 

None generally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Inspect facilities for sanitation or public health violations (both planned and unannounced).

· Primary and follow-up inspections of public establishments to ensure compliance with sanitary codes.

· Relay violations utilizing inspection reports.

· Respond to questions regarding documented violations, prepare detailed reports and maintain inspection records.

· Analyze data from an inspection or sampling to determine if a public health threat exists.

· Prepare reports, convey compliance information to facility owners and explain technical information to a non-technical audience. Inspectors may relay establishment violations to the owner or manager and ensure he or she resolves the violations within an appropriate amount of time.

· May be required to testify at hearings regarding establishment violations utilizing inspection reports.

· Performs other related duties as assigned. 

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Attends Village-sponsored events or meetings, as required. Including: obtaining food handlers, allergen awareness, and food handlers manager’s license. Paid for by Village of Alsip, unless application already has such.

Attends seminars, workshops, and training sessions related to position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The Health Inspector will possess an associate’s degree in natural science, environmental health science, or a related field, two to three years of progressively responsible experience in either the sanitarian inspection field or directing the activities of public health technicians, or a relative combination of education and experience. 

Computer experience to include MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint. 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Comprehensive knowledge of public health and sanitation laws.

· Observant and have good written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment.

· Manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously.

· Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations.

· Familiar with 2021 Code Book

Multi-line phones; personal computer including word processing and spreadsheet software, H.T.E. software; printers, copy machine; postage machine; fax machine; calculator, shredder, and microfiche
