Description

Position Objective:  

To lead strategic efforts advancing in vitro approaches for human health or ecotoxicology testing relevant to the US Environmental Protection Agency. PETA’s Regulatory Toxicology team is looking for a solution-oriented scientist with expertise in toxicity testing and a passion for collaborating, communicating, and replacing toxicity testing on animals. 


Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Independently research, interpret, and make recommendations on topics related to replacing animal testing required by the US Environmental Protection Agency 

• Help design in vitro studies and interpret data received from partnering research organizations

• Identify potential collaborators and lead scientific projects that advance the use of non-animal approaches for chemical testing

• Lead scientific discussions with companies and government agencies, and present at scientific conferences 

• Identify opportunities to provide public comments that promote non-animal approaches and lead the writing and presentation of these comments

• Plan and execute workshops, webinars, and other educational opportunities for scientists

• Write and analyze peer-reviewed articles and other technical papers 

• Translate scientific terminology into lay terms for the public, donors, and reporters 

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

• Masters or PhD degree in toxicology or a related field

• Minimum of 5 or more years experience at the US Environmental Protection Agency

• Support for PETA's philosophy 

• Extensive knowledge of animal and non-animal toxicity tests, and regulatory requirements

• Expertise in conducting testing or reviewing data from in vitro tests, particularly systemic toxicity, carcinogenicity, endocrine, or ecotoxicology. 

• Familiarity with OECD test guidelines 

• Ability to plan scientific studies and analyze study results

• Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of scientists and the public

• Attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and ability to meet tight deadlines

• Exceptional skills in research and strategic thinking

• Exceptional writing, communication, and public-speaking skills

• Professional appearance 

• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times 

• Ability and willingness to travel as well as an in-home office for working remotely

• Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid U.S. driver's license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record


  

The salary range for this position is $95,959.00 - $120,000.00 annually. The ultimate salary within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
