Job Summary

Mazzetti is seeking a Mid-Senior Plumbing Designer or Engineer with deep technical expertise and design leadership experience to join our integrated, multidisciplinary team. You’ll be responsible for identifying and recommending appropriate plumbing systems for a variety of complex projects—including critical healthcare, laboratory, and mission-critical facilities. You will prepare complete plumbing design documentation, oversee contract administration services, and coordinate closely with internal and external partners, including architects, engineers, and sustainability specialists. You will be involved in projects that include healthcare, lab, and other mission-critical facilities, and expected to bring a high level of technical rigor and discernment to every phase of design and construction.

Work Location

This is a hybrid role open to candidates based in the Sacramento or San Francisco areas. The selected candidate will be expected to work onsite, at Mazzetti’s Sacramento office and/or Sacramento-area project sites, a minimum of three days per week. 


Your Tasks Will Involve

Plumbing System Design & Technical Expertise

  • Design and develop moderately to highly complex plumbing systems with minimal supervision.
  • Identify and evaluate system alternatives and recommend the best fit based on project needs.
  • Lead the layout of major plumbing equipment rooms, accounting for constructability and service access.
  • Create system diagrams, control sequences, and points lists for complete and operational systems.
  • Apply energy analysis and equipment selection principles to optimize performance and efficiency.

Documentation & Specification

  • Prepare high-quality plumbing system drawings, specifications, and technical narratives.
  • Write and edit project specifications; assist with updates to Mazzetti’s master specifications.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Coordinate plumbing design efforts with internal MEP team members and external stakeholders.
  • Promote open, team-first collaboration across disciplines, actively considering input from others.
  • Integrate LEED and sustainability strategies into plumbing system solutions.

Code Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure all plumbing designs meet local, state, and national code requirements.
  • Review peer work and occasionally conduct independent quality control reviews.

Construction Support

  • Conduct site walkthroughs and field observations; generate concise reports.
  • Review and respond to submittals and RFIs while anticipating downstream design impacts.
  • Provide oversight and coordination during the construction administration phase.

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Support and mentor junior plumbing designers and engineers.
  • Contribute to team knowledge-sharing, training, and design process improvements.
  • Demonstrate initiative and ownership, managing portions of projects independently when needed.

Travel Requirements: Up to 10-15% as needed in the Sacramento and San Francisco areas for client meetings, site visits, and project coordination.


Requirements

Expertise And Abilities You Will Contribute

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field), and/or 8–10+ years of relevant experience — or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • PE license or Certified Plumbing Designer (CPD) Certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

Experience

  • Experience working on complex projects such as hospitals, labs, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Prior healthcare/hospital design experience in California is highly preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing codes (UPC), NFPA standards, and healthcare/lab design requirements.
  • Ability to manage projects and client relationships independently, with support as needed.
  • Passion for creating sustainable, energy-efficient design solutions

Compensation: The typical salary range for a Mid-Senior Plumbing Designer or Engineer in Sacramento or San Francisco, California is $110,000-$180,000. We are committed to equitable pay and will evaluate final compensation based on relevant experience and skills in alignment with internal equity and market data.
