Responsible for direction and coordination of the staff in the Clinical Laboratory. Activities included are performance of chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests performed in the Clinical Laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Ensures that services are of the best quality, are cost contained and are carried out in an expeditious manner. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities.
Qualifications
• Baccalaureate degree in the clinical laboratory sciences or a related science curriculum from an accredited college or university
• Credentialing as a medical technologist and national certification from any of the following: ASCP, HEW, AMT, ISCLT, etc.
• Greater than 3 years as a laboratory manager preferred or 6 years as a lab supervisor and related experience in supervisory/management methodologies.
Role and Responsibilities
• Maintains laboratory services in accordance with standards established by the hospital, COLA, Health and Human Services and other regulatory agencies.
• Plans, organizes and supervises the operation of the laboratory establishing policies within hospital guidelines.
• Exercises technical supervision over subordinate personnel; resolves technical problems, enforces adherence to standard test, quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
• Manages and ensures adequate coverage of staffing the lab through scheduling of days off, vacations, calling-in sick, etc. in a manner that will produce better than average operational results.
• Maintains compliance with yearly departmental budget goals; recommends appropriate adjustments.
• Applies management technique in directing, counseling, coaching and teaching employees about their position to encourage them in their goals and responsibilities in a positive attitude.
• Responsible for Quality improvement Program for the Laboratory.
• Evaluates new equipment for replacement or additional test services including productivity and cost analysis and makes recommendations accordingly.
• Responsible for completion of annual performance evaluations for each staff member; conducts evaluations for new staff prior to completion of probationary period.
• Counsels employees, develops staff and, as appropriate, utilizes the disciplinary process.
