Description

The Cardiac Stress Test (CST) nurse will be responsible for professional nursing care of the cardiac patient and achieving total patient centered care through uses of the nursing process and the rules and regulations of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The CST nurse will also be responsible for performing procedures including exercise and pharmacological cardiac stress testing with and without nuclear imaging and echocardiography. 


Must have previous cardiac stress testing experience. 

The position can accommodate full or part time, depending on candidate preference. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports and promotes an environment conducive to the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
  • Promotes a therapeutic relationship with patients and families.
  • Will be responsible for development and management of the CST lab.
  • Will assist in policy development and review of CST lab.
  • Assist with scheduling of CST patients in conjunction with Cardiologist’s office.
  • Ensure CST are scheduled within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Ensure orders and patient information is received from ordering Cardiologist.
  • Review diagnosis(s) provided for CST to ensure it is an approved diagnosis by insurance or Medicare provider.
  • Contact each patient pre-procedure to provide appropriate instructions.
  • Obtain medical information, chief complaints, medication, and diagnostic test results in preparation for procedure and document in the medical record. Notify Cardiologist of any abnormal results or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Ensure consent for procedure is obtained. 
  • Assist with IV insertions.
  • Delivery of medication by all routes and emergency medicines with a doctor’s order.
  • Perform assessment, evaluation, and monitoring during cardiac stress tests.
  • Gives appropriate pre and post procedure instructions to patients and documentation of education in the EHR.
  • Meet the expectation of the Cardiologist through accurate data collection from the CST procedure with communication and follow up.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, professionally, and respectfully with team members, providers, and patients as well as their support person(s).
  • Must have excellent communication skills for all interactions.

  • Ability to be open to change and assume additional responsibilities or tasks as directed and complete in a timely manner.
  • May be cross trained to work other areas in the facility utilizing nursing skills and techniques necessary to meet patient needs and provide quality care.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides training and supervision for staff assisting with the CST patient.
  • Provides directions to team members during an emergency with a CST patient.



Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Be a graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • Observe 100 stress tests with a nurse or physician.
  • Interpret 50 12-lead EKGs with a nurse or physician.
  • Complete stress competency checklist prior to performing stress tests independently.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Hold and maintain RN Illinois Licensure.
  • CPR certification or willing to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking.
  • Required to climb, balance, stoop, and kneel.
  • Required to use arms, hands, and fingers for repetitive grasping, pulling, and pushing and feeling.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Works in a well light, climate-controlled setting.
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases, hypodermic/IV needles, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
  • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
