Job Purpose


Assist in delivering engineering services focused on plumbing and fire protection systems within the scope of MEP Engineering. This role involves system evaluations, code compliance reviews, field inspections, and the design of technical solutions to ensure safety, constructability, and regulatory adherence. The Senior Staff Engineer will be responsible for reviewing construction documents, supporting the development of remedial recommendations, and preparing detailed reports. Collaboration with internal teams and external partners is essential to achieve high-quality engineering outcomes across a variety of projects.


Main Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Develop plumbing and fire protection designs in accordance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Perform detailed plan reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with the Florida Building Code and applicable plumbing/fire protection codes.
  • Conduct field inspections and technical assessments of installed systems.
  • Support forensic engineering activities related to plumbing and fire protection.
  • Assist in preparing engineering reports, scopes of work, and construction documents.
  • Provide technical support during permitting and construction phases.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary coordination efforts within the MEP team.
  • Identify technical or coordination issues and escalate appropriately.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to professional development within the team.
  • Maintain knowledge of evolving codes, technologies, and best practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements

Professional Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • A Master's degree is preferred but not required.
  • Engineering Intern (EI) certification in the State of Florida (required)
  • In lieu of EI certification, a CIPE (Certified In Plumbing Engineering) and/or a NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) is acceptable.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License and reliable transportation (required).


Minimum Experience


  • Extensive experience in plumbing and fire protection design and plan review.
  • In-depth understanding of the Florida Building Code and relevant plumbing/fire protection standards.
  • Experience in forensic engineering, permitting, and construction administration preferred.


Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent English writing and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant plumbing fire protection codes and standards.
  • Strong project coordination and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Competent in conducting fieldwork and interpreting mechanical system data.
  • Proficiency in engineering software tools preferred.


Physical Demands*

  • Necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively: 
  • Ability to sit with back at a 90-degree angle for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to look at a computer for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to stand upright for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas (uneven terrain, exposure to outdoor weather elements) 
  • Bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, laying, crawling, and twisting required up to 30% of the time in this role.
  • Must be able to ride in a hoist and/or swing stage.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to use right and left foot for repetitive movements as in operating controls or levers.
  • Full dexterity of wrists and fingers required with repetitive motions. 
  • Must be able to see near, in the distance, color, depth, and range.


*Safety equipment, including but not limited to hard hat, OSHA approved footwear, safety glasses and safety vests, is always required while performing job functions on active construction sites. Safety gloves, ear plugs, and safety harness will be issued when appropriate. *Riding in a hoist and/or in a swing stage to be performed under strict adherence to the OSHA standards. Climbing ladders and scaffolds to be performed under strict adherence to the OSHA standards.
