Community Progress Council, Inc. is seeking passionate Assistant Teachers to support our Head Start classrooms across York County. In this role, you’ll collaborate with the Lead Teacher to plan and implement a high-quality curriculum that fosters growth, creativity, and a love of learning—all while ensuring a safe and healthy environment for every child.
You’ll also engage parents and volunteers in meaningful classroom activities, helping to strengthen family partnerships and contribute to the development of our future leaders.
At CPC, we go beyond the classroom. Our integrated approach includes Family Coaches, Positive Behavior Intervention Specialists, Instructional Support, and Health & Nutrition Education experts—all working together to create a nurturing, inclusive, and impactful learning experience for children and families. Through clear boundaries, effective behavior strategies, and play-based learning, we ensure every child can thrive.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Mission-Driven: Fully embrace and uphold the vision and mission of Head Start of York County and Community Progress Council, Inc.
- Collaborative Planning: Partner with the Teacher and parents to design and prepare developmentally appropriate learning activities that spark curiosity and growth.
- Positive Learning Environment: Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming classroom that fosters respect, active learning, and cultural inclusivity.
- Classroom Support: Assist in preparing materials and adapting learning centers to meet the unique needs of individual children and groups.
- Family Engagement: Support the Teacher in conducting parent conferences and home visits and help develop individualized education plans (IEPs) for each child.
- Child Development: Contribute to assessing children’s progress and collaborate with families and community agencies to address special needs.
- Documentation: Accurately maintain lesson plans, daily observations, health checks, and other required records.
- Community Outreach: Promote the benefits of Head Start and early education to local organizations and stakeholders.
- Confidentiality & Professionalism: Uphold confidentiality standards and serve as a positive role model for parents and volunteers.
- Team Participation: Actively engage in agency task forces and work groups to advance Head Start goals.
- Professional Growth: Pursue ongoing professional development to stay current in early childhood education best practices.

Education and Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or GED, plus at least one year of experience in a child development setting (preschool or elementary).
- Certification: Must obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within two years of hire (Head Start funding available).
- Language & Communication: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals in English. Strong verbal communication skills to engage effectively with groups. Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Haitian-Creole, or Arabic are highly desirable.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build positive relationships and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge: Basic understanding of child development principles and behavior management strategies.
- Technology: Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Professionalism: Demonstrates strong customer service and communication skills while always maintaining confidentiality.
