Role Overview

The Director, Construction (Technical) will lead the execution of data center construction projects across the EMEA region, ensuring technical excellence, operational efficiency, and alignment with company objectives. This senior leadership role combines technical expertise, strategic oversight, and quality management to deliver hyperscale data centers to the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance.

As a key member of the EMEA Construction team, the successful candidate will oversee multiple projects simultaneously, working alongside design teams, engineering stakeholders, project managers, and contractors to align technical activities with CloudHQ’s development goals.

  

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership in Construction Management

  • Oversee technical construction stage designs across multiple projects, ensuring adherence to CloudHQ’s basis of design, approved design documentation, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide strategic input during pre-construction phases, offering guidance on constructability, QA/QC processes, and construction sequencing.
  • Function as a trusted technical advisor for contractors, consultants, and intern teams, driving best practices and aligning technical activities with project requirements.

Quality Assurance & Risk Mitigation

  • Oversee QA/QC activities from concept design through commissioning, ensuring documentation aligns with Sequence of operations (SoOs) and approved design specifications.
  • Implement rigorous technical review processes during the construction phase to identify and resolve issues promptly, coordinating with design, engineering, project management, and commissioning teams.
  • Develop and implement technical strategies to mitigate risks, improve construction performance, and ensure timely delivery of large-scale data center facilities.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Technical Integration

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including design engineering, development, and operations, ensuring construction alignment with broader project goals.
  • Lead project coordination across internal stakeholders (executive leadership, construction teams) and external partners (contractors, consultants, vendors).
  • Serve as the primary liaison between construction and development teams, influencing  strategic decisions and managing technical escalations.

Continuous Improvement & Industry Innovation

  • Monitor emerging industry trends, technologies, and regulatory changes, integrating innovative processes and tools to improve project delivery.
  • Drive initiatives for value engineering, identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality, safety, or sustainability objectives.
  • Champion a culture of safety, quality, and operational excellence across all projects and teams.

Project Execution & Delivery

  • Lead and manage construction technical aspects for large-scale, complex projects, from pre-construction to commissioning and handover.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for technical issues, providing resolutions that involve design, engineering, and QA/QC protocols.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet technical specifications, client requirements, and operational benchmarks.

  

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Expertise in Data Center Construction

  • Proven technical leadership experience within data center construction, large-scale infrastructure development, or mission-critical facilities in the EMEA region.
  • Strong knowledge of data center design, construction methodologies, and QA/QC principles applicable to hyperscale environments.
  • Understanding of building codes, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices for mission-critical construction projects.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Experience managing complex construction projects across multiple geographies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, facilitating collaboration between internal stakeholders and external contractors.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities for resolving technical challenges and driving project success.

Communication Skills

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) in English. Additional European language proficiency is advantageous.
  • Ability to articulate technical concepts clearly to diverse stakeholder groups, including executive leadership, contractors, and vendors.

Compliance & Travel Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of EMEA-specific environmental regulations, safety standards, and energy efficiency guidelines related to construction and development.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the EMEA region for on-site inspections, team meetings, and stakeholder engagements.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or a related area.

Certifications:

Professional certifications such as PMP, MRICS, CEng, LEED AP, or equivalents are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10+ years of technical and construction leadership experience, including oversight of hyperscale data center construction projects, colocation facilities, or major industrial developments.
  • Prior experience working with hyperscale cloud providers, colocation operators, or major contractors in the data center sector.
