The Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager leads and supports a team of underwriters while maintaining a hands-on underwriting portfolio as needed. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring underwriting excellence, supporting the development and performance of team members, and contributing to profitable growth. This position combines strong technical expertise with effective people management skills to drive results and uphold underwriting standards.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee stakeholder engagement and team performance to drive sustainable and profitable business outcomes.
  • Responsible for performance and coaching of staff and decisions regarding talent selection and development. Ensure new members of the team receive proper training.
  • Monitor team performance and provide regular, structured coaching to develop employee knowledge and skills.
  • Accountable for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability of assigned underwriting portfolios.
  • Responsible for the assessment of risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiate appropriate loss prevention actions. 
  • Oversee the analysis of coverage and limit requests and decide what terms to offer. 
  • Ensure business is priced in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships with internal coworkers and agent/brokers to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Visit agent/brokers to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of goals.
  • Develop and monitor management reports on service levels, activity, and customer experience. Make appropriate recommendations for and implement improvements.
  • Prepare internal and external reports in the rating and underwriting processes, such as loss history reports, outside inspections, loss control, etc. to analyze and communicate quality and quantity of risks underwritten.
  • Analyze competitor’s actions, Brokers’ activities, and market conditions and activities for opportunities. Develop and implement marketing plans to increase volume and profitability in support of divisional objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for and spearhead development of new business and/or programs.
  • Serve as a technical expert in and ensure staff can interpret and explain products, facilities, practices, and services.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree or higher required.

Equivalent experience may substitute for minimum educational requirements. Equivalent experience may include five plus (5+) years of relevant experience.


EXPERIENCE

Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of Excess and Surplus (E&S) Property underwriting experience, including leadership experience required.

Experience with Property and Casualty lines of business in Southeast US preferred. Specialization in wind exposure and earthquake coverage preferred.

LICENSES

Valid Driver’s License required.

2-20 Florida Agent License preferred.
