Site Descriptions

New Beginnings Youth Development Center (NB) is the District of Columbia’s long-term detention center for male and female youth located in Laurel, MD. It is responsible for the care and custody of youth placed in secure detention by court order. 


Position Overview

The Audio/Video Production Teacher exposes students to careers in video production, broadcast, social media, podcasting, and print and digital media. During the program, students may learn about the roles of a production team, explore industry business aspects, and gain studio production experience. Students will also improve their communications and technical skills by researching, writing scripts, and editing news stories, ads, and videotaping segments.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Demonstrates strong content knowledge
  • Implements and aligns curriculum and activities to meet the appropriate CTE and academic standards
  • Thoughtfully plans daily lessons and implements specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary
  • Designs and implements assessments that measure progress towards academic standards and diagnose areas of student misunderstanding
  • Highlights the pathways to working in the industry and the daily responsibilities in the industry
  • Establishes and maintains positive contact with multiple organizations related to audio/video production
  • Incorporates technology daily while teaching multiple platforms in the Adobe ACA, such as Premiere Pro and After Effects
  • Arranges industry exposure opportunities for students, such as field trips (as possible), guest presentations, job shadow experiences, internships, etc.
  • Participates in collaborative curriculum development and school-wide programs/activities
  • Creating a classroom and school environment that features a rich diversity of resources engages student interest, promotes student leadership, and stimulates student learning
  • Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity, including completing all areas of the IEP
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Audio/Video, Digital Media, Mass Media, Technology Education, or related field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain within 1 year of employment)
  • Two or more years of industry-related experience (television, radio, film, mass communications, etc.)
  • Proficient in the use of state-of-the-art audio/video production equipment
  • Certified in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects (preferred)
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)

Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.  Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page.
