Mechanical Systems Engineer
Description

The Mechanical Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, integration, and optimization of mechanical systems that support Fervo’s geothermal energy projects. This includes ensuring that subsystems such as rotating equipment, heat exchangers, piping networks, and geofluid gathering systems function cohesively within the overall plant design. A key focus of this role is developing and interpreting P&IDs and other process documentation to ensure alignment between mechanical systems and process requirements. The engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across process, subsurface, electrical, and operations to deliver reliable, efficient, and cost-effective designs. This role will report directly to our Engineering Manager.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, development, and integration of mechanical systems in geothermal facilities—including rotating equipment, heat exchangers, condensers, cooling towers, and piping networks
  • Own and interpret P&IDs and other process documentation to ensure mechanical designs are aligned with process and project requirements
  • Conduct mechanical and thermal simulations to optimize system performance, CAPEX, OPEX, and reliability
  • Validate mechanical deliverables including data sheets, piping isometrics, equipment lists, and vendor packages
  • Collaborate with Process Engineering to ensure compatibility between mechanical systems and operating parameters
  • Provide systems-level oversight during equipment selection, vendor review, fabrication, commissioning, and troubleshooting
  • Interface across geoscience, reservoir, electrical, and environmental teams to integrate mechanical systems into the broader geothermal development lifecycle
  • Support field operations and maintenance teams with engineering guidance, documentation, and root-cause analyses
  • Uphold industry standards and codes (ASME, API, ASTM, etc.), while driving safety, quality, and environmental compliance

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in geothermal, power, or energy sectors
  • Expertise in reading and developing P&IDs and related process documentation
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid systems
  • Familiarity with system-level thinking and multi-disciplinary project execution
  • Proficiency in CAD and simulation tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, ASPEN)
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage cross-functional interfaces and resolve integration challenges
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% to field and office locations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in both EPC and operator-side engineering environments
  • Experience reviewing vendor design packages, technical submittals, and equipment specs
  • Familiarity with geothermal or industrial plant mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of value engineering, lifecycle optimization, and reliability-centered design
  • Familiarity with ASME Section VIII, API 610/682, and piping standards (B31.3, B36.10, etc.)

Location

Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX with growing offices in Oakland, CA, Golden, CO, Reno, NV, and Salt Lake City, UT. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at the Houston or Reno offices will be required. Some travel is required for this position.
