Summary
A paving roller operator is a skilled heavy equipment operator responsible for compacting freshly laid asphalt or other materials (soil, gravel, etc.) to the required density and smoothness for roads, parking lots, and other surfaces. This role is crucial for the structural integrity and durability of paved surfaces.
Essential Functions

- Safely and efficiently operate various types of rollers (e.g., breakdown, rubber-tire, finish rollers) on construction sites.
- Perform daily machine walk-around inspections and safety checks, checking fluid levels, hoses, and wear components. Report any deficiencies or maintenance needs to the foreman.
- Drive the machine in successive overlapping passes, adjusting speed, direction, and vibration settings (amplitude and frequency) based on material type, temperature, and project specifications to achieve proper compaction and a smooth, imperfection-free finish.
- Proactively communicate and coordinate with the rest of the paving crew (paver operators, density technicians, truck drivers, ground crew) using hand or audio signals to maintain a consistent flow of material and a uniform paving process.
- Perform manual compaction (hand tamping, guiding plate compactors) in areas not accessible to the roller and assist with general laboring assignments (shoveling, raking, cleaning up excess material) when required.
- Adhere to all safety rules, compliance, and environmental requirements, attending regular safety meetings and ensuring a safe working environment.

Competencies
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce Safety procedures
- Previous experience operating paving or heavy equipment is often preferred, with many positions requiring 1-2 years of relevant roller operator experience.
- Willing to work outside in all types of weather
- Ability to work extended or overtime hours as needed
- In-depth knowledge of construction procedures, equipment and OSHA guidelines
- Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to hold a Med Card
- Strong hand-eye coordination, mechanical aptitude, sharp decision-making skills, and the ability to work as part of a team are essential.
