Summary: The Manager for International Student Services and Community Belonging serves as a primary advisor to international (F-1) students, completes projects related to community building, student clubs and activities, health and wellbeing programs, and forwarding the Conservatory's goals related to community building and belonging. The manager helps to build a sense of community and school spirit at SFCM and introduces students to the San Francisco Bay Area. The manager serves as the primary point of contact for community-wide student events and student activities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
International Student Advising (50%)
- Advises international students and their dependents and helps them maintain lawful immigration status through continuous education on immigration regulations, policies, and procedures
- Issues immigration documents necessary to obtain the F-1 student visa; advises students on the process for obtaining the student visa at the US embassy; serves as a DSO to students in F-1 visa status per DHS regulations, including F-1 visa holders participating in OPT
- Ensures institutional compliance with federal regulations by performing timely and accurate registration and reporting of all F-1 students to the government
- Issues CPT and travel authorizations
- Presents information to student groups at orientations and employment workshops
- Maintains active membership in NAFSA and utilizes the ongoing DSO training opportunities
- Other reasonable duties as assigned
Student Development and Services (25%)
Promotes student involvement in activities and responsible community behavior; builds community and cooperation among students by engaging students in the program planning process and through the programs and services provided by the Office of Student Affairs; provides administrative and logistical help in support of events and functions; serves as a repository of programming ideas and provides on-site supervision of events and activities, sometimes during evenings and weekends.
- Manages community building events such as Orientation, Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Dinner, End-of-Semester Celebrations, and other school events.
- Advises and assists student clubs in planning events, understanding policies, and navigating resources.
- Develops health and wellbeing workshops in coordination with the Conservatory Counselor and Physical Therapists.
- Assists with the student health insurance program, including waiver/enrollment
- Create program and event marketing materials, such as posters and social media posts.
- Publish the weekly email student newsletter. Train and oversee student employees to assist with marketing, newsletter, and social media.
- Regularly communicate with SFCM Marketing and Communications on student programs and publicity.
- Manage the 50 Oak Instrument Locker assignment process and train student staff to assist in management of the service.
- Assist in the oversight of the Student Affairs budgets.
- Assist with the revision of the Student Handbook and other Office of Student Affairs publications.
- Advises students regarding SFCM policy and services, and other miscellaneous issues. When necessary, refer students to other offices and staff.
- Serves in the on-call rotation.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities - Belonging/Community Development (25%)
- Work closely with the Associate Dean for Community Development with scheduling of facilitation events focused on community and belonging.
- Meet regularly with student affinity groups such as Pride Network, BSU, La Raza to discuss concerns and issues
- Represent SFCM at conferences such as Sphinx, Equity Arc, Etc.
- Meet with both students and faculty to discuss issues that may arise in the classroom
- Coordinate and provide logistical support for community building events surrounding training, workshops, masterclasses, etc that are designed to increase belonging.
- Support with Compliance issues at SFCM
- Meet with colleagues in admissions, advancement, and development in support of initiatives in the Community Development department.
- Superior organization and planning skills with a strong attention to detail; ability to multitask and work well in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Must be diplomatic, discreet, tactful yet firm, and flexible; ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Google Apps for Education.
- 2-4 years’ experience in an administrative office setting; experience in an academic setting preferred.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Evening and weekend required depending on the event.
- Proficiency in Chinese is desirable.
