Raleigh, NC Advancement
Job Type
Full-time
Description

The North Carolina Museum of Art stewards, studies, and exhibits the People’s Collection and offers welcoming and diverse opportunities to connect with the arts, nature, and people. The NCMA Foundation supports the mission of the NCMA and NCMA Winston-Salem and seeks an experienced candidate to fill the role of Director of Annual Giving. This position is within the Advancement Department and is responsible for promoting the mission of the NCMA by planning, implementing, and managing a comprehensive annual giving program to maximize annual support for the Museum across both locations (Raleigh and Winston-Salem).

Annual giving at the NCMA through membership, sponsorships, and contributions to the NCMArts Fund provides critical unrestricted funding for both campuses. Each year, hundreds of donors contribute gifts of all sizes through these channels, collectively raising $4–5 million in operating support for the Museum.

As the Museum enters the final year of its Reimagining the Possible campaign, the Director of Annual Giving will be integral to shaping strategies to grow the Museum’s base of annual donors and members and ensuring a robust and sustainable annual fund year-over-year. The ideal candidate will be in command of established best practices in annual giving yet bring entrepreneurialism and creativity to the work, with a willingness to think outside the box.

Position Duties Include:

  • Oversight of the annual giving program, managing strategies related to membership, sponsorships, and annual fund donations to meet the Museum’s annual fundraising goal.
  • Management of a portfolio of roughly 150 active prospects that have either previously made gifts ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 or who have been identified with capacity up to $25,000, with a focus especially on individual donor sponsorships and upper-level membership.
  • Conceptualization, management, and execution of direct-mail solicitations and appeals, inclusive of end-of-year, membership, and combined asks, as well as special fundraising initiatives such as raffles, giveaways, and in-person fundraising.
  • Adaptation and optimization of existing strategies and development of new, multichannel initiatives to secure vital operating      unrestricted funds in collaboration with the Chief Advancement Officer, other key Advancement team members, and stakeholder departments such as Marketing and Communications and Visitor Experience.
  • Drafting and creative conceptualization of all direct and digital appeals in coordination with the Marketing and Communications Department and Chief Advancement Officer and assurance of the timely production and approval of print, email, and online assets.
  • Regular analysis of data related to annual gifts and membership and preparation of reports that can be used to inform direction and segmentation of appeals and annual fund marketing, with a goal of solidifying and growing the journey of visitors to members and donors.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least six years of fundraising experience with a proven track record of success in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding annual gifts at the $10,000 level and higher.
  • Prior experience with membership or alumni programs, with preference for experience in museums or other membership-based arts organizations.
  • Experience with and openness to new technologies and other best practices being deployed in annual giving or marketing.
  • Moderate to advanced experience in annual fund campaigns utilizing a variety of data-driven methodologies and proficiency with CRM and donor management database systems, with Tessitura preferred.
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, hold team members accountable, and meet deadlines.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, as evidenced in a required cover letter, work samples, and in interviews.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a prioritization of collaboration, interdepartmental communication, empathy, and a high level of sensitivity to donor privacy and fundraising ethics.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team while maintaining attention to detail and meeting performance goals.
