SMG seeks a local Safety Advisor with Transmission & Distribution in Charleston, South Carolina.


The key function of a Safety Advisor is to put safety at the forefront of their job, prioritize the client’s needs, work well in a team setting, be self-managed, and be flexible when it comes to change. 


Overview of Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation of the Contractor Safety Management Program across assigned projects.
  • Conduct high-quality safety observations, documenting findings with an emphasis on leading indicators.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to support safety initiatives.
  • Provide safety leadership and guidance for grid enhancement projects.
  • Ensure contractor compliance with safety policies, procedures, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Clearly communicate safety expectations and requirements to all contractors.
  • Represent the utility client in project-related meetings and discussions.
  • Prepare clear, concise safety reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture among field crews.
  • Adhere to internal standards, policies, and procedures while supporting continuous improvement.
Requirements
  • Previous experience in Transmission & Distribution operations.
  • Proficient in email communication, electronic document creation, and developing safety-related materials such as bulletins and alerts.
  • Skilled in navigating new software platforms and applications.
  • Strong ability to multitask and manage multiple competing priorities effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Capable of leading meetings and initiatives to drive safety and operational outcomes.

Physical Demands of the job may include:

  • Moving about long distances
  • Ascending/descending stairs and ladders
  • Remaining in a stationary position for a prolonged period
  • Working in extreme weather (hot and cold environments)
  • Being exposed to loud noises
  • Wearing personal protective gear correctly
