Position Summary
- Teach the required 1L Legal Research course.
- Provide legal reference services to faculty, students, judges, lawyers, and other library patrons.
- Supervise the law library serials process, to include hiring and training student worker help.
- Facilitate communication between legal vendors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reference & Technical Services:
- Assisting patrons navigate databases, archives, and specialized collections.
- Manage the processing of serials materials.
- Communicate with library vendors to resolve billing issues.
- Manage the routing of current awareness articles.
- Participate in collection maintenance.
- Participate in collection development.
- Participate in current awareness research for faculty.
Instruction Services:
- Participate in teaching Legal Research, a required for-credit first-year course.
- Instructs students on how to effectively find, evaluate, and use information.
Additional Services:
- Supervise and train library staff on reference related requests.
Minimum Qualifications
Education - Juris Doctorate & MLIS.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional research skills, proficiency with digital technologies, and excellent communication.
- Exhibits a high level of interpersonal skills to understand and solve student issues. Effective at meeting deadlines and satisfying on-demand projects while multitasking.
- Will quickly become proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, the Sierra integrated library system, Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law, HeinOnline, and other databases and programs.
- Must be a team player with a willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
The job requires repetitively lifting lightweight objects where frequent bending or stooping alternates with lighter activities.
Work Environment
Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
Licenses/Certifications
- Will be expected to join the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) (library pays for membership).
- Will be expected to join the Great Lakes-Ohio Valley Association of Law Librarians (GLOVALL) (library pays for membership).
- Encouraged to participate in the Law Librarians of Metro Detroit (LLMD) group.
- Active participation in association events.
